Welcome
to the Mississippi Children's Authors and Illustrators
Bio-Bibliography. This list includes 228 authors
and illustrators of children's and young adult literature,
all of whom have a connection to Mississippi, either
through birth or residence. Each entry includes
biographical
information, a photograph when possible, and a bibliography
of their books for children. While many of the entries
are for contemporary authors and illustrators, there
are those of historical importance as well.
The
authors and illustrators are listed in alphabetical
order and can be accessed from the Index.
History
of the Mississippi Authors Bio-Bibliography Project
This project has evolved from a two-page handout
produced in the early 1980s by John M. Kelly, former
curator of the de Grummond Collection. That list
was later expanded by Kay L. Wall, former University Librarian,
whose diligent research added many new names. Several
years ago, Dee Jones, then the curator of the de Grummond
Collection, began her own research--adding authors
and illustrators to the list, securing biographical
information, compiling bibliographies, and locating
photographs.
Once the content of the bio-bibliography was perfected,
the next step was to make it Internet accessible.
Daylan Stephens, who was a graduate student at The University
of Southern Mississippi's School of Library and Information
Science in 2003, was responsible for proofreading, updating
bibliographies, locating and scanning photographs,
and working through the intricacies of Dreamweaver
to give this document international accessiblility.
Many thanks for technical assistance go to Ann Ashmore,
former de Grummond Collection Specialist.
It is our hope that this bio-bibliography will be
of assistance to teachers, librarians, and others
interested in children's literature. This is a work-in-progress,
so we encourage corrections, additions, and comments.
