de Grummond Collection Celebrates 40th Anniversary
In 1966, Lena Young de Grummond began writing to authors and illustrators asking for original material. She wanted to show her children's literature students the process of writing, illustrating, and publishing children's books. The year 2006 marked the 40th anniversary of Dr. de Grummond's efforts. As part of the celebration, the Collection sponsored various activities throughout the year, including a new exhibit: "One Woman's Vision: The de Grummond Collection at 40" on display April 2006 through March 2007 in the new exhibit space on the second floor of Cook Library. Current hours for the exhibit are: Mon-Thurs 9-9; Fri 9-8; Sat 10-6; Sun 12-6.
Rey materials featured in new book
Items from the H.A. and Margret Rey Collection were used in the new book The Journey that Saved Curious George by Louise Borden. The author, who conducted her research at the de Grummond Collection in 2002, tells the story of the Reys dramatic escape from Paris during World War II, just prior to Nazi occupation. The book, published by Houghton Mifflin in September 2005, was recently acknowledged as an American Library Association's Notable Children's Book 2006, and features digital photographs of Rey materials housed at the de Grummond Collection. Congratulations, Louise!
