Tip-Ins

Single page

1. Trim the edges of the page slightly so it is just a bit smaller than the text block.

2. Brush a line of glue along the back of the inner edge of the page.

3. Carefully press the page into the gutter of the text block as far in as possible.

4. Place the book on the drying shelf with its spine hanging off of the edge of the shelf and a weight as long as the book resting just to the right of the spine.

Multiple pages

1.  Trim the edges of the pages slightly so they are just a bit smaller than the text block and all the pages are the same dimensions.

2.  If the pages are loose single sheets, brush a line of glue along the back of the inner edge of each page and press it to the page following it. If the loose pages comprise an entire signature, sew them together rather than gluing.

3. Glue a strip of tissue to the front of the inner edge of the top page, leaving half of the width of the tissue hanging off.

4. Place the pages between two sheets of wax paper, place a weight on top of them, and allow the glue to dry overnight.

5. Fold over the tissue and cut off the excess tissue at the top and bottom of the page.

6. Place the loose pages into the gutter of the text block and mark with a pencil the line where the loose tissue ends.

7. Remove the loose pages and line a piece of scrap paper along the pencil marks. Brush a light coat of glue between the pencil marks and the gutter of the text block.

8. Carefully slide the loose pages with the tissue folded down into the gutter of the text block.

9. Place a sheet of wax paper over the flap of tissue and gently press it against the thin coat of glue with a bone folder.

10.  Place a sheet of wax paper over the tissue that is glued into the text block.

11.  Place the book on the drying shelf with its spine hanging off of the edge of the shelf and a weight as long as the book resting just to the right of the spine.

Date due slips

1.  Cut the tip-in page a little bit smaller than the text block.

2.  Glue the tip-in page to the text block and not to the back cover. The date due slip typically needs to be on the left so that the text block will absorb the pressure of being stamped rather than weakening the covers.

3.  Do your best to make the tip-in fit securely into the book's interior edge.

4.  Place a sheet of wax paper, shiny side down, against freshly glued surfaces. Place the book on the drying shelf with its spine hanging off of the edge of the shelf and a weight as long as the book resting just to the right of the spine.
