Spine Replacement

(Use for books with spine damage only)

1. Cut only the fabric on the book about ¼” from the spine and remove the spine cover.

2. Cut the fabric at the head and tail of each board about 1” from the edge of the fabric and gently separate the fabric from the boards.

3. Gently separate the pastedowns from the head and tail of each board about 1” from the spine.

4. Clean the spine of the book before gluing a strip of endpaper material over the spine.

5. Cut a spine inlay to match the height and width of the text block.

6. Cut a strip of buckram about 1” longer than the height of the board and wide enough to wrap well around the spine and over the boards.

7. Glue the spine inlay approximately in the center of the buckram and affix a security strip to it. Brush glue on the exposed portions of the boards.

8. Center the spine inlay over the spine of the text block and slide the long sides of the buckram between the boards and the book fabric. Press the buckram to the boards.

9. Glue the fabric on the covers back in place over the buckram.

10. Brush glue on the short sides of the buckram and tuck them between the boards and the pastedowns at the head and tail of the book. Glue the pastedowns back in place over the buckram.

11. Slide knitting needles into the creases, weigh down, and let dry overnight.

12. Glue any salvaged spine information in place on the new spine.
