Pamphlet Binding for Special Collections

(For pamphlets, use a pamphlet binder with a pocket.)

1.  Choose a pocket about ½” wider than the width of the pamphlet. Trim a slightly larger pocket to the proper size if necessary.

2.  Insert a piece of scrap paper into the pocket at a slant to avoid gluing together the edges of the pocket.

3.  Apply glue to the back of the pocket, gluing from the middle outward and paying special attention to the pocket edges. You will get glue on your hands!

4.  After applying the glue, discard the scrap paper.

5.  Place the pocket onto the inside back cover of a narrow-spine pamphlet binder about ¼” from the bottom and the fore edge of the board.

6.  Press down with a Teflon bone folder, especially on the edges of the pocket.

7.  Insert sheets of wax paper into the pocket at a slant, just as you did with the scrap paper earlier.

8.  Place weights over the entire pocket and let dry overnight. Be sure to keep the pamphlet with its binder.

For very small books and compact discs ¼” or more in depth, use a pamphlet binder with
a phase box if you feel the item is too thin to stand alone on the shelf.

1.  Make a phase box for the book, following the directions for making boxes for paperback books. You do not need to use Velcro fasteners if they will make the box and pamphlet binder too bulky.

2.  Apply glue to the back of the phase box and place in onto the inside back cover of a wide-spine pamphlet binder.

3.  Press down with a Teflon bone folder.

4.  Open the phase box, place a sheet of wax paper over the center of the box, place weights over it, and let dry overnight. Be sure to keep the book with its binder.
