Buckram Corners
- If the corners of the book are frayed, brush a little glue on them, wrap them in wax paper, secure with a clip, and let dry.
- Cut 4 pieces of buckram or other book fabric 1 ½” x 3” and trim 2 of the corners, as such:
- Situate
the first corner so that the bad side of the fabric touches the outside
of the board, the peak of the fabric piece rises above the corner of
the board, and the edges of the fabric jut out just beyond the edges of
the board.
- Fold the
sides of the fabric over the fore-edge first, then over the top or
bottom of the board. Press down on the folds to shape the fabric into
the shape of the board.
- Remove the fabric and apply glue only in the triangular center of the fabric.
- Place the corner back onto the board just as it was before and press down on the front of the board with a bone folder.
- Apply
glue to the wing of the fabric at the fore-edge and fold it over to the
back of the board. Press down on the side and back of the board with a
bone folder.
- Make a
small fold at the peak of the fabric corner with the tapered end of the
bone folder to make sure that the very corner of the board is covered
with fabric. Apply glue to the wing of the fabric at the head or tail
of the board and fold it over to the back of the board. Press down on
the back of the board with a bone folder.
- Repeat for the other 3 corners.
- When
finished, place wax paper between the fly leaves and pastedowns and
place a weight over the fabric corners. Let dry overnight.
