CMC In-house Classification System
SECTION 1: Materials Formats
The CMC and CURRLAB (Gulf Coast) collections are divided into the following
materials formats:
Note on Kits and Games:
AACR2 defines a kit
as “An item containing two or more categories of material, no one of
which is identifiable as the predominant constituent of the item.”
These may also be called “multimedia.” BibServices will use this
definition in applying the term “kit” in the call number and the GMD
(see section II, Kits, for a call number example).
AACR2 defines a game
as “An item or set of materials designated for play according to
prescribed or implicit rules and intended for recreation or
instruction.” Although some games may contain multimedia components and
technically fall under the definition of kits, BibServices will
designate games as games in the call number and the GMD (see section VII, Realia, for a call number example).
SECTION 2: Call Number Patterns
A. Call Number Classification for Subject Area: See Appendix
A.
B. Grade Level1,2.
See Appendix B for grade, level and unit abbreviations. The grade
level often will not be relevant to Special Education materials; at
other times grade or age will be used. Regular Education textbooks
use grades. See
Appendix B
C. Publishers: For a complete list of publishers, see Publisher
List.
D. Codes for item formats designate the form/description of
accompanying material. See Format Style Sheet for list of codes. Only
codes on the list are authorized (for example, I:3, IV:4, etc.). Submit
new codes as needed for review. See Appendix
D
E. Number: All numbers should be three digits.
F. Cutter: For textbooks, cutter by publisher (see Publishers’
List). For kits and activity books Cutter by main entry. This
can be by either author or title and usually appears on the 3rd line
of the call number. If Cuttering by author, always add work marks
for title. (Example:
Mathematics Skills by Joe White; Cutter
.W55Ms) Use the first letters of the first two most
significant words in the title. First letter is capitalized. For multivolume
works, add part number to 4th line of the label: Vol.,
No.,
Gr.,
etc. (See Appendix B for enumeration abbreviations)
I. Activities, Kits, Learning Games, Oversize, Multimedia, Teacher Resources, Tests
A
cutter (as opposed to an accession number) is used in the call number
for the following types of material: ACTIVITY, KIT, LRNGAME, OVERSIZE,
MULTIMED, TRES, and TEST ( Hattiesburg campus Curriculum Materials
Center ) and ACTIVITY, KIT, LRNGAME, and OVERSIZE (USM Gulf Coast
Curriculum Lab). The material type is located at the top of the call
number in all caps. Appendix C lists the subject areas/terms and
abbreviations for the material types listed above. The subject in the
call number appears just below the material type. The cutter for author
main entry or title main entry will be below the subject, then the year
and grade if they appear on the material being cataloged.
Call number format :

Titel main entry:

Capitalize the first letter of the author's last name. Then use cutter
table for the next two numbers. Use the first two most significant
words in the title. Capitalize the first letter and use lowercase for
the second letter.
|
Capitalize the first letter of the title using the most significant words. Then use the cutter table for the next two numbers.
