Procedures for Cataloging Multi-Volume Music Scores

1.) Search WorldCat for the right record. Records that represent all volumes are preferred to individual records for each volume.

Make sure the record has very detailed notes that represent the content of all Volumes. 2.) A. If the first volume and the last volume are both available,

For the fixed field: Date should be coded as “m”,

Date 1 should be the publication date (or copyright date) of the first volume

Date 2 should be the publication date (or copyright date) of the last volume.

Example:     Date: m     Date 1: 1950     Date 2: 1980  

In the 260 field, the format should be:

260  New York : International Music Co., c1950-c1980.

B.) If the first volume is available, but the last volume is not available, and it is not detectable from any information resources, 

For the fixed field: Date should be coded as “m”,

Date 1 should be the publication date (or copyright date) of the first volume

Date 2 should be coded as 19uu, 20uu if century is known; or uuuu, if century is unknown; or 9999, if the work is still being published.

Example:     Date: m     Date 1: 1950     Date 2: 19uu  

For the 260 field, the format should be:

260 New York : International Music Co., c1950-c[19--?].
260 New York : International Music Co., c1950-c[20--?].
260 New York : International Music Co., c1950-c[----?]. C.)  If the last volume is available, but the first volume is not available, and it is not detectable from any information resources

For the fixed field: Date should be coded as “m”,

Date 1 should be coded as 19uu

Date 2 should be the publication date (or copyright date) of the last volume

 

Example:     Date: m     Date 1: 19uu     Date 2: 1980

For the 260 field, the format should be:

260  New York : International Music Co., c[19--?]-c1980.

 

For 090 field, the call number should include the date of the first volume.
