Processing Procedures:*

General
  1. Match correct label with book.
  2. Pay attention to whether the book is Cook, Reference (Pink), Gunn (Dark Green) Cox (Light Green) or McCain (Blue). Do not put Cook security procedures in Cox or McCain materials.
  3. Separate any books that require further attention (e.g., tip-in, stamping, new label). Do not leave them on the truck.

    Labels

  4. Leave a margin of 1/8" between the printed information and the top and bottom of labels. Do not over-trim labels.
  5. Labels should be placed on the spine of the book, unless the book is too thin for the label. If excessive trimming would be necessary to fit the spine, affix the label to the front.
  6. Labels should be applied ½" (a little less than a finger's width) from the bottom of the book, if on the spine. If on the front, affix it approximately the same distance for the top and spine well.

    Label Protectors

  7. Use plastic label protectors on all books that are not smooth to the touch.
  8. Apply the protectors straight and allow a margin of at least 1/4" around the label.
  9. Make sure that the protector wraps around the front and back of the book at least 1/2" onto the covers or fits completely on spine without any overhang.
  10. When wrapping labels around the front and back covers, press the protectors into the wells of the spine gently but firmly.

    Stamps

  11. Stamps should be straight and clear.
  12. Inside property stamps and "Does Not Circulate" stamps may be stamped on the first white page from front/back cover. If artwork or maps appear, use the next white page unless the same graphic appears in both front and back then it is acceptable to cover one of the endpapers. If the inside cover is a dark color, stamp the property stamp on a white label and affix the label to the bottom center of the page.
  13. If a mistake is made with the inside stamps, use white-out to cover the mistake, and place a white label with correct stamp over the error.
