About Authority Control
Mission
To standardize forms of entry for authors, subjects, series, and uniform
titles in accordance with national and local standards in order to maximize
user access to information in the online catalog.
About Authority Control at USM Libraries
Authority control is supervised by the Senior Catalog Librarian and
performed by librarians and staff in the Cataloging and Acquisitions
units. USM Libraries has been a member of the Library of Congress’s
Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO) since 2001, contributing records
for personal, corporate and conference names. Bibliographic Services
imports authority records from OCLC and Validator (TM) to the local
Sirsi Unicorn TM database and creates local authority records using
AACR2rev, LCSH, and local policies and standards.
