Cartoonist Profile: Eldon Pletcher

Pletcher - New Orleans Times Picayune

In 1922, Eldon Pletcher was born in Goshen, Indiana, and later attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. After serving in World War II, he attended the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and John Herron Art School in Indianapolis. He was an editorial cartoonist for the Sioux City Journal (1949-1966) and retired in 1984 after nearly twenty years at the New Orleans Times Picayune. He won the Christopher Award in 1955 and garnered Freedoms Foundation Awards for more than a dozen years. Many of his cartoons deal with Louisiana state affairs and the local New Orleans area.
