Introductory Sessions:

Cook or Gulf Coast General Orientation (40 min)

Description: This session is intended to be an introduction to the main library, services, locations and general resources needed by students. It includes a short walk-around of the main area and a classroom presentation introducing students to the online catalog, and a general article database (such as Academic Search).
Objectives:
Upon completion of this session, students should know:
  • To go to the Circulation Desk to check out books, Reserve items and laptops and know how long they may check out those materials
  • That they need a copy card to make copies or print and know where they may purchase cards
  • To go to the Information Service Desk for help with research or general information needs
  • To go to the Information Service area for reference materials and for computers for Internet research or writing papers
  • Where periodicals, microforms and media are located
  • Where 'stacks' are located
  • To use ANNA to find materials owned by the University Libraries
  • To use an article database (such as Academic Search) to find articles for their research

Cook Library 2nd Floor South Orientation (30 min)

Description: This session is intended to be a general walk-around introduction to 2nd Floor South and its collections including Media Reserves, current periodicals, films/dvds/videos, music, newspapers, microform collections, maps, and government documents. The tour includes a demonstration of the microform readers.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this session, students should know:
  • To go to the 2nd Floor South service desk for help with finding materials and for general information needs
  • Where periodicals, microforms and media are located
  • To go to the 2nd Floor South service desk to check out Media Reserves, films/dvds/videos/music, portable dvd and video players, and know how long they may check out those materials
  • How to find a specific periodical on microform and be able to use the microform reader to view/print
  • That they need a copy card to make copies or print and know where they may purchase cards

Cook Curriculum Materials Center Orientation (30 min)

Description: This session is intended to be a general introduction to the library's educational resources available to support the elementary and secondary teacher education program. Your class will see samples of a variety of items housed in CMC including Kits, Games, Realia and Manipulatives, Activity Books Juvenile Literature (Caldecott, Newbery and Corretta Scott King), Computer Resources, Transparencies, Maps, Learning games, Pictures, Ellison Bulletin Board Machines, Ellison Dye Cuts, and the state adopted K-12 textbooks. The Curriculum Materials Center is located in Room 109K on the first floor of Cook Library.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this session, students should know:
  • To go to the Education Resources Center (ERC) Desk for help with finding educational materials and for general information needs
  • That there are a variety of educational materials available in the ERC to help them with lesson and activity planning
  • To go to the Education Resources Center to check out educational materials and know how long they may check out those materials
  • How to use ANNA to locate materials specific to the ERC

McCain Special Collections Orientation (50 min)

Description: This session is intended to be a general overview of McCain Library's collections or a focused introduction to one of its specific collections including University Archives, Historical Manuscripts, Mississippiana, Rare Books, Digital Collection (Civil Rights/Editorial Cartoons) or de Grummond Children's Literature Collection. The instruction sessions may be tailored to the particular needs of a class.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this session, students should know:
  • How to request and handle materials in a Special Collections environment
  • What types of materials are held in the various collection areas of McCain Library
  • How to use ANNA to locate materials specific to McCain
  • How to search for McCain archival and manuscript materials using online search tools
