Using EndNote with ANNA (online catalog of USM Libraries)

- Mark desired records
- Go to "Print/Email" at top of screen.
- Select "Print Formatted."
- You do not have to print the following page, but save the results as a text file (with extension
.txt.)

- Perform search.
- Mark records of interest to you by clicking on the folder icon that appears at the end of the
citation.
- When finish selecting citations click on Folder has ... items icon
- Choose Save to Disk. (the Print and E-mail option will not save the data in the correct
format.)
- Select Bibliographic manager tab.
- Select the Save option.
- Select File then Save As from your browser's toolbar
- In the Save As... window, select the drive letter in the Save in: box and enter a filename in the
File name: box. Change the Save as type: box to display Plain text (*.txt). EndNote can only import
plain text files.
OR, you can use the "Direct Export" function available with Ebsco databases to send these citations directly into an EndNote database (which allows you to skip the importing step). EndNote must be loaded onto the computer where you are running the search.

- Once you've obtained your search results, click on the WebSPIRS "Save" button.
- Select the following "Save Records" options: Which fields?: All fields Include...: Record
number and database name
- Field labels: Short labels
- Click the "Save Records" button. Use your web browser to save the page as "Text
Only" (do not save in HTML format)
CSA
ASFA 1: Biological Sciences and Living Resources; Ecology Abstracts; Oceanic Abstracts; Social Services Abstracts; Sociological Abstracts
- Perform search.
- Mark records of interest to you.
- Click on Save/Print/Email Records button
- Select Records option: Marked records.
- Select Record format - Complete Record.
- Select desired file format in Save options.
- Click on Save button.
- In the Save As... window, you can change the filename if you wish. EndNote will import a file with a
.bin extension from a CAS database.
- Click on the Save button.

JSTOR
- To save your Saved Citation List to a local file, select "citation-manager" format from
the top or bottom of the Saved Citations List, then choose "Export."
- (If you prefer, you can also email your saved citations to yourself for future use.) A window will
open, asking you where you would like to save your JSTOR citations.
- Make a note of the location and filename you choose because you will have to refer to this file
later, during the import process.
ABC-CLIO
America: History and Life; Historical Abstracts
- Perform search.
- Tag records of interest to you.
- Click on "Output Options" button.
- Specify entry format, either short or full.
- Select output type: Tab delimited
- Click on the "Submit" button.
- From the File Menu, select Save As....
- In the Save As... window, select the drive letter in the Save in: box and enter a filename in the
File name: box.
- Change the Save as type: box to display Plain text (*.txt). EndNote can only import plain text
files.

Importing items from FirstSearch databases can be done three ways:
- Downloading citations [this is the only method available when searching a
database on a computer that does not have the EndNote program]
- Export [search within the database and transfer records directly to EndNote.
Requires EndNote be loaded on the same computer as the search is being run]
- Use a Connection file [Connect and search the database through the EndNote
Program.]
Downloading citations
- Perform search.
- When the results of your search are displayed, click in the box to the left of a citation in the
list to mark the citation for export, or when a single citation is displayed, click in the Mark box, to
mark the citation to export.
- After selecting citations from a single search, click on Marked Records in the left column.
- When the marked citations are displayed, click on the Email icon. NOTE: To use FirstSearch citations
with EndNote, you must email them to yourself and then save them as a text file. They will not work if
you display the citations in a Web page and then use the Browser Save As command.
- Be sure that the citations will be sent as Detailed Records and plain text. Enter your complete
email address in the box.
Export
- Perform search.
- When the results of your search are displayed, click in the box to the left of a citation in the
list to mark the citation for export, or when a single citation is displayed, click in the Mark box to
mark the citation for export.
- After selecting citations from a single search, click on Marked Records in the left column.
- When the marked citations are displayed, click on the Export icon.
- In the next box indicate Marked records from this search and click on Export on the following
box.
- This will open EndNote and prompt for an EndNote library name.
- A database list will appear. Find the name of the database currently being used followed by (OCLC)
(e.g. WorldCat (OCLC) )
- Citations will be automatically imported when library is opened.
ISI
Web of Science (Arts and Humanities Citation Index; Science Citation Index)

PROQUEST
Dissertation Abstracts
Direct Export allows you to search within the database but allows for immediate transfer of records to EndNote. Requires EndNote be loaded on the same computer as search is being run.
Direct Export
- Perform search.
- Citations of interest can be marked by clicking in the box to the left of each record.
- Click on Results & Marked Lists
- Click on Export citations.
- Choose Export directly to ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager.
- This will open EndNote and prompt you to open a library. Citations will be automatically imported
when library is opened.
