EndNote Import Filters and Connection Files for USM Library Databases

Some databases do not provide a way for you to mark and export records. In this case you will have to enter the data manually into EndNote. You can also use the instructions in the EndNote manual to write or configure your own import filter/connection file.

What the fields in this table mean:

• Download Filter allows you to download a program (the EndNote import filter) which will parse the records you've retrieved so that information is added to the proper fields within the EndNote program.

The Filter Manager in EndNote (go to Edit - Import Filters - Filter Manager) lists all import filters which came loaded with the software. If you are using a database for which a filter is not already provided, you may have to download one from the EndNote site or this page. It's also possible to write your own. When you click to view an import filter in the Filter Manager, you may also view information about the filter itself (any known problems). For instance, one field (e.g. date) may not load correctly despite the fact that you are using the correct filter. The Filter Manager will inform you of any minor changes you might need to make once you have imported the record.

EndNote provides a generic filter which can be used with all databases, but you may have to adjust the record in your EndNote library if it does not load correctly.

If you have the option of using "Direct Export" as in some of the EBSCO databases, you do not need to use an import filter. Records in the Ebsco database will be sent directly into your EndNote library once they've been exported. In order to use "Direct Export," you must have EndNote loaded onto the same computer.

• Connection Files allow you to connect directly to that database while in the EndNote program via the Z39.50 protocol. Although this does not allow you to use the full searching capabilities of the database, you are saved the trouble of downloading/importing records from another database into EndNote. If a connection file is available, you can connect to a database and download records from within the EndNote program, which is convenient and saves time. Many library catalogs are searchable in this manner. A number of connection files for various library catalogs come with your EndNote software package.
