Tutorial
Options for Retrieving Articles
Contents of this Tutorial:
1.) Checking the USM Libraries' Collections
2.) Getting Articles Owned by the USM Libraries
3.) Ordering Articles not Available in the Libraries' Collection
***********************
Description: Often, the article that you
want is not available full-text in the database that you are searching. If an
article is not full-text in the database you are searching, there are other
methods available for getting the article. This tutorial will walk you through
the various options.
***********************
1.) Checking the Libraries' Collection
Using ANNA: When an article is not available in our databases, it is necessary to check ANNA, the online library catalog. Most of the Libraries' online databases will have a “Find It!” link under citations of articles that are not full-text. FindIt: (1) checks our other article databases for a full-text copy of the article and/or (2) assists you in checking ANNA for the journal if the article is not available online. You can also go to the library home page, click on ANNA, type in the journal title and do a search for "Periodical title".
Practice Session
1.) From the library's home page to the right, locate and click "Databases" on the top right of the page.
2.) Look for "Browse by Subject or Academic Area," select "Literature/English" from the drop down menu
and click "Submit."
3.) Listed are all of our databases that can be used to find materials
dealing with literature. Scroll down to the "MLA (Ebsco)" and click "Use database."
4.) (Note: If you are working off-campus, enter your SOAR login and password when prompted).
In the search box, type in Jane Austen and John Keats: Negative Capability, Romance and Reality
(you may type in or copy/paste the title in the search box and hit "Enter"). Look at the result. The citation
that appears indicates that the article
is in the Keats-Shelly Journal. Note the year.
5.) Notice that the citation does not have a link to full-text. Instead, a
link to "Find It!" is provided.
Click on the "Find It!” link beneath the citation.
6.) A separate window will open. First, “Find It!” performs a search
for the full text of the article in other databases. If it is available, links to those databases will appear.
If the article
is not available in full-text, click on “Check our Holdings in ANNA
” to perform a search in ANNA for the journal title. Scroll down
the ANNA page to view the volumes and issues that the library owns
in that format.
7.) Sometimes more than one record appears in ANNA for the same journal. This will happen if the Libraries has
copies of items in different formats (some journals issues may be on microfiche, film and paper). Sometimes the
library's subscription to a journal is electronic. If this is the case, the record
in ANNA will indicate "Online" and provide a link to browse issues
of that journal. A link to retrieve the article appears on the left of the citation and is labeled "URL."

3.) Ordering Articles Not Available in USM Libraries
A. Document Delivery: If a journal article you need is not available through a full-text database or in the library's collection, the Document Delivery department can order it for you. Articles will typically arrive via email within one to three days of being ordered (longer if placed over the weekend.)
Quiz Question #3
Document Delivery can be used to:
Find articles about my topic
Search for books and other information
Order articles not owned by USM Libraries

B.) Other Document Delivery Services:
Document Delivery services, as you have already noticed, can be used for
more than just ordering articles. Other types of materials that can be ordered through Document
Delivery include books, patents, DVDs, Videos, dissertations/theses and microforms. In addition,
Document Delivery can be used to place Campus-to-Campus requests.
Non-article materials ordered through Document Delivery Services usually arrive at USM within ten to fourteen working days after a patron submits a Document Delivery service request, though some items may take longer. Many items, particularly articles, may only take a few days to arrive. By logging in to the Document Delivery system, you can check on the status of your request and determine exactly when your item was sent or mailed by the other library. Charges for Document Delivery services vary depending upon the policies of the lending library. Most items obtained are free of charge to the patron. However, some items borrowed do require payment.
Practice
1.) Click the link to the library's
home page.
2.) Click on “Document Delivery” and then "Access Illiad."
3.) Enter your SOAR login and password. If you have not already
registered, fill out the registration form that appears and click "Submit."
4.) There should be a menu on the left. How would you request a book or article from the Gulf Coast campus?
Locate the "Local Requests" section.
5.) How would you request a copy of an article already owned by USM Libraries?
Locate the "Eagle Express Services" section.
6.) Typically, this is where you would fill in the form to order an article
through Document Delivery Services but since this is just practice, we'll
just log out - click the Logoff button at the top of the menu.
