article is not full-text in the database you are searching, there are other
methods available for getting the article. This tutorial will walk you through
the various options.

2.) Checking the Libraries' Collection
A. Using the library catalog: When an article is not available in our databases, it is necessary to check the online library catalog. (Most databases offer access to a search engine called “Find It!” which (1) checks other library databases for a full-text copy of the article and then (2) assists you in checking the library catalog for the journal if the article is not available online.
If USM Libraries owns the volume/issue of the journal you need, you can make a photocopy of the article. (If you are a distance education student and cannot come to campus, options for receiving the article are discussed below).
Practice Session
1.) On the library's home page to the right, locate and click on "Articles" under
the Find It section.
2.) From the drop down menu under "Browse by Subject or Academic Area" select "Literature."
3.) Listed are all of our databases that can be used to find materials
dealing with literature. Click on "MLA (Ebsco)."
4.) (Note: If you are working off-campus, enter your USM ID and password when prompted).
In the search box, type in jane austen and persuasion and click
"Search." Look at the results page.
5.) For each citation that does not have a link to the full-text article, a
link to "Find It!" is provided to see if the journal
title is owned by USM Libraries. For any article on the page that is NOT full-text,
note the journal title (not the article title) and the year (or volume #) from
the citation. Click on the "Find It!” link beneath the citation.
6.) A separate window will open. First, “Find It!” performs a search
for the full text of the article in various library databases. If the article
is not available in full-text, you can tell “Find It!” to perform a search in the library catalog
for the journal title. If the library does not own the journal, you will not
retrieve any records for that search. If USM Libraries does own the journal,
a record should appear for the journal title. If more than 1 record appears,
it is because there are separate records for each format the library receives
(print, microfiche, microfilm, online). If more than one record appears, click on the title to view the record and scroll down
to the bottom of the page to view the volumes and issues that the library owns
in that format.
