Now, we come to the last topic of our Tutorial : The 008 field. It is also referred to as Fixed-Length Data Elements, or Fixed Field. This field contains 40 character positions that provide coded information, and precedes the main part of a MARC authority record (the variable fields). The display of a fixed field might differ from system to system. However, there is only one set of fixed-field elements for an authority record regardless of the type of heading—unlike bibliographic records, which may display different fixed-field elements depending on the physical format of the material represented. Below is an example of the 008 field in an authority record for a personal name:

4 400 1 Smith, Julie ‡q (Julie A.)

In the fixed field above, there are codes to indicate how the authorized heading in the 100 field is to be used—as a name, subject, or series. Since a personal name can be used both as an author and a subject heading, both Name use and Subj use in the above record are coded a. A personal name cannot be a series, so the Ser use field is coded b. Other codes indicate whether a series is numbered, whether a subject can be subdivided geographically, and which cataloging rules were used in creating the heading. If a fixed field element is not applicable to the type of heading in the 1XX field, it is usually coded n, as in the Ser num element above. For further information on the fixed field, please refer to Understanding MARC Authority Records, Part X and XI.
