While the tags containing authorized headings and references to them are the core of an authority record, there are other fields that also contain important information. Some of these fields, such as the 008, 010 and 040, will be found on every LC authority record; others will vary depending on the type of authority record and the particular heading involved. While some authority records are fairly brief, requiring only the authorized heading and a 670 field, others may contain a great deal more information. The sample records at the end of the tutorial will demonstrate the use of some of these tags.

(In this case, the term “Corrupt practices” is not valid as a heading by itself, but it can be used as a subdivision in ways specified in the note in the 260 field.)
360 Complex “see also” reference for subjects.
64X A group of fields on series authority records that contain information about the publisher, how the series is numbered, whether the series is analyzed, etc.
663 Complex “see also” reference for names.
664 Complex “see” reference for names.
665 History reference. This field may contain, for example, information on the history of a corporate body that has been known by several different names.
666 General explanatory reference—name. Contains information on how names having a shared characteristic (such as a particular prefix) are to be entered.
667 Nonpublic general note. This field may contain information useful to catalogers.
Example: Not the same as Smith, James M., writer on paleontology (used to avoid confusion between two authors with similar names)
670 Source data found note. Gives a citation for a consulted source that contains information about the heading in the 1XX field of the authority record. Example: Ireland , 1974: ‡b t.p. (Howard Smith)
675 Source data not found note. Gives a citation for a consulted source that does not contain information about the heading in the 1XX field. It may contain information about terms used as cross references in the record.
680 Public general note. Used to provide a note for public display that does not fit into any of the other specially defined note fields. Can be used to define relationships among multiple headings to assist the user in searching.
Example: ‡i Here are entered works dealing with employer-employee relations in general.
Works on that field of management which has the responsibility for recruiting, hiring …are entered under ‡a Personnel management.
781 Geographic subdivision usage. This field appears on some geographic name records and shows how the place name is to be used as a subject subdivision. Example: ‡z Georgia ‡z Atlanta |
