Fields & Tags: Each authority MARC record is divided into fields. There is a field for the heading being authorized, a field for each cross reference, and so on. Each field is marked by a 3-digit tag, which identifies the kind of data that follows it. For example, the number 100 is a tag which indicates an authorized heading for a personal name:

Some tags are more frequently used than others. In the MARC authority standard, certain tags are used over and over while others appear less often. Go to the next page to see the most frequently used MARC authority tags. It is highly recommended that you memorize each tag with its related field.
