- What is a MARC record?
A MARC record is a Machine-Readable Cataloging record.
- And what is machine-readable?
“Machine-readable” means that one particular type of machine, a computer, can read and interpret the data in the cataloging record.
- What is an authority record?
An authority record contains standardized forms for names and subjects (and in some cases, titles) that are used in bibliographic records and provides cross references in catalogs. A record includes three basic components: (1) Headings, (2) Cross references, and (3) Notes. (MARC authority records often also contain additional information.)
