Will Campbell has written seventeen books and has been nominated for many prestigious literary awards. Brother to a Dragonfly was a National Book Award finalist, and won the Lillian Smith Prize and the Christopher Award in 1978. Other awards include the Friends of American Writers, the Alex Haley Award and a Lyndhurst Prize.

Campbell's major works are non-fiction, telling the stories of Duncan Gray, And Also With You: Duncan Gray and the American Dilemma, Mercer University The Stem of Jessie: The Costs of Community at a 1960'sSouthern School, a communal farm, Providence, and his own life, Brother to a Dragonfly, Forty Acres and a Goat. Works of fiction include The Glad River, Cecelia's Sin: A Novella and two children's books.
