Using SciFinder From OUTSIDE of the physical Library

SciFinder Scholar can only be used from computers connected to USM's physical network, or Eagle Air. To use Scifinder outside of the physical library, the SciFinder application must be downloaded and installed on your computer. This is a four-step process:

  1. DOWNLOAD SciFinder Application. The SciFinder application download is protected, and you must be a valid patron to access the download site.
  2. Run the installation program, following all prompts.
    • On the PC, the installer will place the scifinder directory directly on the 'root' level of your C: drive. [C:\SFSCHLR\]
    • On the Mac, it will also install to the root level of the hard drive.

  3. Download the 'connection file' [site.prf ] . This is an institution-specifc 'passkey' file that the SciFInder application must be able to access and use to make an authorized connection to the SciFinder databases. Make sure that you download this file INTO the C:\SFSCHLR folder [PC] or the scifinder folder on the Mac (main hardrive, root level). The SciFinder application needs the site.prf file to be in this exact location in order to connect to SciFinder home.
  4. Run the application.

NEW! Try the SciFInder IE Toolbar!
