EZRA JACK KEATS:
A Virtual Exhibit

The de Grummond Collection is the sole repository for the Ezra Jack Keats Archive. Holdings include manuscripts, typescripts, sketches, dummies, illustrations, and proofs for 37 books written and/or illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats. Also included are his personal papers, personal and professional correspondence, fan mail and artwork from children, photographs and childhood memorabilia. Complementing the artwork created for children's books are numerous examples of his easel art, dating back to his high school years.

This photograph from the May 13, 1940 issue of Life magazine of a small boy from rural Georgia was the inspiration for the character of Peter.
The Ezra Jack Keats Virtual Exhibit highlights original materials from seven titles featuring the character, Peter, who first appeared in 1962 with the publication of The Snowy Day. The materials are part of the Ezra Jack Keats Papers housed in the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection at The University of Southern Mississippi.

For each of the seven titles, the web site includes an annotation, a finding aid, and original materials such as corrected typescripts, storyboards, and sketches.
