Biographical Sketch
Janice May Udry was born on June 14, 1928 in Jacksonville, Illinois. She received her
bachelor's degree in 1950 from Northwestern University. Her first book, A Tree
Is Nice (1956), was awarded the Caldecott Medal for the illustrations by Marc
Simont. Some of her books have also been illustrated by such famous illustrators as
Maurice Sendak and Ed Young.

Scope and Content
The collection contains galleys, proofs and notes for four titles. The materials are
arranged alphabetically by title. Within each title the materials are arranged in the
probable order in which they were created.
The Mean Mouse, and Other Mean Stories (1962) is a picture book illustrated by Ed Young. There are 11 short stories within the book, all about mean creatures such as a dragon, a rabbit, and a blackbird. There is a proof for this title. In Thump and Plunk (1981), two siblings who fight about a doll named Plunkit and their mother has to help them resolve their differences. There is a galley and a proof of the front matter for this title. The Moon Jumpers (1959) is a picture book about four children, who on a summer evening, pretend that they are "moon jumpers" playing in the moonlight. There are notes to the editor for this title. There are also notes for Is Susan Here? (1962).
