Biographical Sketch
Before she legally changed her name, Tasha Tudor was born Starling Burgess on August 28, 1915 in Boston, Massachusetts. She studied at the Boston Museum Fine Arts School and married Thomas McCready, Jr. in 1938, and had four children. She spent most of her adult life attempting to emulate a nineteenth-century rural lifestyle, by purchasing farms in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont. These homes often lacked electricity and running water. Ms. Tudor washed clothes by hand, learned to spin and weave, made bread from scratch, and decorated her homes with antique furniture.

Ms. Tudor began illustrating children's books in 1938, creating artwork for her own books as well as those written by other authors. Over the years, she enjoyed writing and illustrating fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and stories concerning holiday celebrations or farm life. Her style of illustration was frequently characterized as romantically old- fashioned, Victorian, and nineteenth-century. In addition to numerous other awards and honors, two of her works, Mother Goose and 1 Is One, were named Caldecott Honor Books. Ms. Tudor passed away at her home in Marlboro, VT on June 18, 2008. She was 92.
