Biographical Sketch

Norma Feldstein Simon was born Christmas Eve 1927 in New York City, the daughter of a restaurant owner, Nathan Philip Feldstein, and Winnie Bertha Lepselter Feldstein. Orphaned at the age of 18, she attended Brooklyn College (now Brooklyn College of the City University of New York) where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947. She was certified in the education of young children at the Bank Street College of Education the following year and pursued graduate studies from 1948 until 1950 at the New School for Social Research. She earned a Master of Arts degree from Bank Street in 1968. Simon told Something About the Author that "the most important single influence on my work and my life has been my long and challenging association with the Bank Street College of Education." She credited Lucy Sprague Mitchell, Margaret Wise Brown, Irma Simonton Black, and others in helping to shape her goals. In 1951 she married Edward Simon, who worked in advertising and consumer research. He had a daughter, Stephanie, from a former marriage, and together they had two children, Wendy, who died of cancer in 1979, and Jonathan.

Simon was employed as a clerical worker for a broker before earning her teaching certificate. She taught children in several schools and programs in New York and Connecticut in the late 1940s, early 1950s, and early 1960s. In 1953 she founded and directed a cooperative nursery school in Rowayton, Connecticut. In the late 1960s she worked as a group therapist and special teacher for two child guidance centers. She was the materials development and skills editor for the Bank Street-Macmillan Early Childhood Discovery Materials in 1968 and associate skills editor of "Discoveries" for Houghton in 1972. Simon also served as a consultant to schools, publishers, and educational film companies in the late 1960s and 1970s. Several of her books have been translated into Spanish, and Albert Whitman gave two books, What Can I Do? and What Can I Say? experimental first-run printings both English and Spanish/English versions. All Kinds of Families has been translated into German, Danish and Swedish and adapted for filmstrips. The Wet World, illustrated by Jane Miller, and The Daddy Days, illustrated by Abner Graboff, were named New York Times Best Illustrated for 1954 and 1958 respectively.

In 1993 Simon resided in South Wellfleet, Massachusetts, where she was working on another Mama Cat book, a folk tale, two concept books, plus several other ideas for young children.

Scope and Content

The Norma Simon Papers are composed of selected correspondence to the de Grummond Collection and Simon's working papers for forty-one of her children's books, published between 1954 and 1991. These papers are comprised chiefly of holograph notes, manuscripts, typescripts, children's writings and artwork, correspondence with publishers and illustrators, dummies, and occasional proofs, galleys, promotional items and critical reviews and evaluations.

Book titles are arranged in alphabetical order. The papers previously had been divided by title and arranged in a loose chronological, or sometimes reverse chronological, order. Whenever possible, the processor attempted to arrange the papers in a stricter chronological order, supplying approximate dates based on clues obtained from correspondences, revisions in scripts, physical clues, and so on, and reuniting correspondences with their enclosures. No papers were moved without their titles, even though some may have been misfiled or only briefly mentioned the title with which they were filed. Therefore researchers concerned with a particular title may wish to cross-reference other titles by the same publisher with working papers of similar dates. This is particularly true of the Jewish holiday series published by the United Synagogue of America Commission on Jewish Education. Simon often recycled papers, so researchers may want to look at the reverse side of typescripts, correspondence and other papers for additional information.

The Jewish Festival books are among Simon's early works, published between 1959 and 1961. Designed for Sabbath school children, these titles include Every Friday Night (1961), Hanukah in My House (1960), My Family Seder (1961), Happy Purim Night (1959), Our First Sukkah (1959), The Purim Party (1959), Rosh Hashanah (1959), Simhat Torah (1960), Tu Bishvat (1961), and Yom Kippur (1959). Simon later wrote two lengthier Jewish holiday books for Crowell, Passover (1965) and Hanukkah (1966).

The Simon Papers are significant in that they encompass the whole body of an author's published books from the beginning of her career in the early 1950s through 1991, with the exception of two titles, Elly the Elephant and Mama Cat's Year. The great majority of titles are represented by working notes, manuscripts, typescripts, revisions, correspondence with editors, and in some cases, dummies, galleys, and proofs. The correspondence particularly offers insights into what governed Simon's writings and revisions and her working relationships with various editors at Albert Whitman, Lippincott and other publishers, as well as biographical details of her life and career.

"I have thought of children as my life's work, more than writing," Simon told Contemporary Authors, "...Children themselves have provided the material and inspiration for most of my books, and children reading my books often nod their heads in agreement as they recognize my mirrors for their very own feelings, experiences and expressions." Simon's working papers thoroughly document how Simon achieved those nods of recognition. Simon often interviewed children in a classroom setting to develop ideas for a book, both before she began writing and during the revision and editing process. A number of the titles contain children's artwork and writings, and her correspondence with editors and illustrators show her concern that both the content of her books as well as the wording accurately reflect children's realities.

The Simon Papers will be of particular interest to those studying multicultural issues in children's literature, as Simon's working papers, her correspondences with editors and illustrators, reflect her concern that children truly recognize themselves in her books--whether they be male, female, black, white, Chinese, Vietnamese, Jewish, Puerto Rican, poor, middle-class, disabled, or part of traditional or nontraditional families. The Simon Papers indicate that she was particularly concerned with breaking gender and racial stereotypes as well as those surrounding the elderly. She strove for depictions in text and illustration that reflected a diversity of adults--working mothers, nurturing fathers, active grandparents, single parents, to name a few examples--as well as children.

Her books were also written from a social worker's standpoint, and that of an educator, and reflect her concern for children coping with problems. In some instances, Simon broke new ground, in dealing with controversial topics for children's books, such as death, pregnancy, or nontraditional families. Three titles represented in the collection concern the death of a friend of family member or of a pet: Benjy's Bird (1965), The Saddest Time (1986) and We Remember Philip (1979). All Kinds of Families (1976) concerns traditional and nontraditional families. In I Wish I Had My Father (1983) a young boy laments the absence of his father, while in the award-winning The Daddy Days (1958) the young children cherish time spent with their working father. The Baby House (1955) focuses on the addition to a child's world of a human baby and animal babies. Another book focusing on families is Wedding Days (1988), which illustrates various kinds of wedding ceremonies and why people choose to marry.

Other titles, such as How Do I Feel? (1970), I Was So Mad (1974; 1991), and I Am Not a Crybaby (1989; 1991), are designed to help children explore and understand human emotions. What Do I Do? (1969) and What Do I Say? (1967) similarly guide children to understand expected behavior, activities or communication; these titles were given a limited Spanish/English text press run as part of the first printing, in what was considered by Albert Whitman, Simon, and Joe Lasker, the illustrator, to be a creative and experimental move.

In See the First Star (1968) a preschool boy visits an optometrist and gets eyeglasses. In Go Away, Warts (1980) Freddie is embarrassed by his warts and puzzled by their mysterious disappearance. Books such as these, as well as Why Am I Different? (1976) and Nobody's Perfect, Not Even My Mother (1981) promote the concepts of tolerance, individuality and self-acceptance.

Ruthie (1968) is the semi-autobiographical novel of a young Jewish girl who stays with another family while her mother is hospitalized for an operation and finds that being without a mother demands a lot of courage and understanding on her part. Ruthie is Simon's only published juvenile novel.

Cats Do, Dogs Don't (1986), Oh, That Cat! (1986), Where Does My Cat Sleep? (1982), and Mama Cat's Year, all illustrated by Dora Leder, indicate Simon's affection for felines. Oh, That Cat! depicts Max the Cat in various frustration-inducing activities, while Where Does My Cat Sleep? shows that while humans usually sleep in their beds, Rocky sleeps anywhere he wants. Mama Cat's Year is not presently represented in the collection.

Remaining titles are generally concept books for young children. Some contrast differences, such as Cats Do, Dogs Don't (1986), Children Do, Grown-ups Don't (1987), and I Know What I Like (1971), while others, such as A Day at the County Fair (1960), My Beach House (1958), A Tree for Me (1956), Up and Over the Hill (1957), The Wet World (1954), and I'm Busy, Too (1980) focus on simple ideas or situations, such as a fair, a rainy day, or work and play.
