Shirley Rousseau was born on May 20, 1928 in Oakland, California. Her father was a horse trainer, and her mother was a painter. After graduating from the California Institute of Fine Arts in 1951, she married Patrick Murphy. She worked as a designer and decorator to support her husband's education and later became a sculptor and painter, exhibiting at numerous one-woman and group shows in California and the Southwest. She moved with her husband to the Panama Canal Zone in the early 1960's where she began writing. The ideas for her first two books White Ghost Summer (1967) and The Sand Ponies (1967) came from her experience training horses with her father. She has since written over thirty books. Most of these works are fantasy novels for young adults. In these books, sentient animals and heroic children join forces to defeat the powers of darkness. For each of these books the collection holds a typescript and at least one galley.
Most of the books documented in this collection are fantasies for young adults, set in other worlds where forces of good and evil do battle with magical weapons. Intelligent monsters and animals also help and hinder the heroes and heroines of these novels. Five of Murphy's novels are part of a series set on the world of Ere. The heroes and heroines of these novels, such as Thorn and Ramad, use their visionary, psychic powers to battle evil seers and sorcerers, dragons and monsters. In the course of their long battle, they ally themselves with wolves, travel outside of time and fight for control of the runestone. In order, the novels in this series are The Ring of Fire; The Wolf Bell; The Castle of Hape; Caves of Fire and Ice; and The Joining of the Stone. For each book in this series, the collection contains a typescript, and one or more galleys. For The Ivory Lyre, the collection also holds blues and folded and gathered sheets. Also, there is a proof for The Joining of the Stone.
In the Dragonbards Trilogy, Tebriel, a dragonbard, and his singing dragon, Seastrider, combine their voices in a powerful song to fight the powers of darkness which enslave the world of Tirror. Tebriel searches for other dragonbards on the way to a final battle with Quazelzeg, lord of the dark. The books in this series are Nightpool; The Ivory Lyre; and The Dragonbards. Each of these books is documented with a typescript, multiple galleys, blues, and folded and gathered sheets.
Some of the other books for young adults in this collection also deal with magical powers or creatures, both in this world (The Flight of the Fox; and The Grass Tower) and in imagined universes (Medallion of the Black Hound). The Flight of the Fox and The Grass Tower are documented with typescripts and galleys. The collection holds a typescript, galleys, blues and folded and gathered sheets for The Medallion of the Black Hound.
Murphy's first two young adult novels, White Ghost Summer and The Sand Ponies feature young people who find strength and friendship through their relationships with horses. There is a typescript for The Sand Ponies, and a galley for White Ghost Summer.
The Pig Who Could Conjure the Wind, Valentine for a Dragon and The Song of the Christmas Mouse are all written for a younger audience, roughly ages seven to eleven. All three feature fanciful, intelligent creatures, and the first two are more humorous than Murphy's books for older children. Mrs. Tortino's Return to the Sun is also comical and aimed at the seven- to eleven-year-old audience. For each of these books, there is at least one typescript and one galley.
