Biographical Sketch

Barbara Beasley Murphy was born February 4, 1933 in Springfield, Ohio. She was a student at Drake University from 1951-1953 and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina in 1955. She taught junior high school English in Ohio from 1956-1957 and high school drama and speech in New York from 1957-1962. She also was an actress at Ohio's Wilmington Summer Theater in 1957.

After teaching, Ms. Murphy published her first book, Home Free, in 1970. Since that time, she has continued to write and publish books for both children and young adults.

Ms. Murphy is a member of PEN, Phi Beta Kappa, and a founding member of the Children's Writer's and Artist's Collaborative (CWAC). She was also a member of the design and building committees for the New Saint Peter's Church in Manhattan for eight years. She won the Christopher Award in 1979 for her work as a compiler and contributor to the New York Kid's Book (1979).

In the fall of 1982, Ms. Murphy's book No Place to Run (1977) was banned and later moved to the restricted shelves of the school libraries in Calhoun County, Alabama. The story focuses on a how a boy named Billy Jansen deals with the guilt he feels after spray painting a homeless man. Some parents and ministers in the area felt that the "vulgar language" in the book was unnecessary and wanted the book removed from the shelves. In 1983, with financial support from PEN, Ms. Murphy traveled to Calhoun County to remove her book from the restricted shelves and petition the school board to reconsider its decision. However, the school board maintained its position and kept the book off the regular shelves.

Scope and Content

The collection contains a combination of typescripts, proofs, manuscript notes, and correspondence for ten titles by Barbara Beasley Murphy. The collection also contains publicity and contribution materials for New York Kid's Book (1979), a book she helped compile with the CWAC. The titles are arranged in alphabetical order. Within each title, the materials are arranged in the probable order in which they were created. Correspondence is arranged by title with the exception of correspondence with the de Grummond Collection.

Ms. Murphy's first book, Home Free (1970), is the story of two boys who experience racial prejudice while vacationing in South Carolina. There are typescripts and a manuscript journal for this title. One Another (1982) is a love story about a high school girl and a foreign exchange student from France. Ms. Murphy spent over five years writing this love story and wrote many revisions. The story was first written in first person and later rewritten in third person. There are five boxes of manuscript notes, typescripts, drafts, and revisions, including the typescripts in which she changed the point of view. Travels With Uncle Jack (1975) is the story of a young boy who travels with his Uncle Jack in an old racing car. There are typescripts, manuscript notes, research materials, and correspondence for this title.

Horace "Ace" Hobart is a character in three of Ms. Murphy's books. Ace is a sixteen year old high school student facing a gang called the Purple Falcons in the first book, Ace Hits the Big Time (1981). In the second book, Ace Hits Rock Bottom (1985), Ace and the other Purple Falcons get summer jobs at a retired actors' home and get involved in an arson plot. In the last book, Fly Like An Eagle (1994), Ace takes a trip out West with his father to find his father's birth parents. Ace Hits the Big Time and Ace Hits Rock Bottom were co- authored by Judie Wolkhoff. There are typescripts and revisions for all of the titles. However, the editor at Delacorte only sent Ms. Murphy the later half of the finished typescript from Ace Hits the Big Time because she felt "it was only fair" to split it with Ms. Wolkhoff. There are also manuscript notes and correspondence for Ace Hits Rock Bottom and Fly Like An Eagle. Ms. Murphy also co-wrote another book called Thor Heyerdahl and the Reed Boat Ra (1974) with Norman Baker. The book describes the two trans-Atlantic voyages of Thor Heyerdahl in reed boats like those built in ancient Egypt. There are typescripts, drafts, revisions, photocopied photographs, and manuscript notes for this title.

Ms. Murphy also wrote two stories about a ten-year-old girl named Annie. In Annie and the Animals (1989), she and her friends, Belinda and David, help save a dog and kitten. Annie comes to the rescue of a horse at her aunt's ranch in Annie at the Ranch (1991). Both titles have correspondence and typescripts. Annie at the Ranch also has 15 photographs of a ranch, negatives, and a style sheet.

The New York Kid's Book (1979) is a collaboration of over 160 authors. The book was written to provide interesting facts and true stories about New York City. The book was edited and compiled by members of the CWAC, of which Ms. Murphy was a founding member. The book was to be distributed free of charge after publication to all the public libraries in New York by the publisher, Doubleday. Doubleday first made the decision not to give complimentary copies to the contributors. Ms. Murphy received numerous letters from authors such as Jane Yolen, Aliki, and Sue Alexander asking her to persuade Doubleday to give them complimentary copies, which they were later given at publication. This correspondence, as well as letters from other CWAC members and publishers at Doubleday are in the collection. Ms. Murphy was also on the publicity committee for the book. It was highly publicized through the use of bumper stickers on taxis and locally sponsored activities for children. Her publicity notes and ideas are in the collection, as well as newspaper clippings, folders, and a sample bumper sticker. She was also a contributor to the book and her typescripts are included in the collection.

Ms. Murphy's book No Place to Run (1977) takes place in New York City and is the story of a small town teenager named Billy who helps a local tough boy named Cougar spray paint a homeless man while he's sleeping on a street bench. During the rest of the story, Billy has to face his guilt as well his fear when the homeless man dies. The book was later banned in 1982 by a school board in Calhoun County, Alabama. There are three boxes of typescripts, drafts and revisions for this title. There are also manuscript notes, correspondence, two newspaper articles on censorship, and a postcard.
