James Edward Marshall was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 10, 1942. Raised on a large farm miles from the nearest town, he spent a good deal of his time as a child alone. His mother encouraged him to read, however, and the novels of Charles Dickens and a twenty-four volume history of England were particular favorites when he was young.
Following high school, Marshall won a scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, which he attended from 1960 to 1961. A hand injury received in a plane accident ended his hopes of becoming a professional musician, so Marshall returned to Texas to pursue an academic degree. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and French after attending several institutions, then returned to Boston to teach high school French and Spanish for two years.
It was at this point that Marshall began seriously to draw in his spare time, chiefly for his own amusement. A friend persuaded him to take his portfolio to Houghton Mifflin, and he was given his first illustration assignment the following day. This first book, Byrd Baylor's Plink, Plink, Plink (1971), was a commercial failure.
Nevertheless, Marshall was convinced that book illustration was the career he wanted to pursue. The following year saw the publication of Marshall's first critical success, George and Martha (1972). Authored and illustrated by Marshall, George and Martha was chosen as one of the New York Times' ten best illustrated children's books for 1972, was included in the 1973 Children's Book Showcase, and became an ALA Notable book.
At the time of his death in 1992, Marshall had written, co-written, and illustrated more than forty books for children, both under his own name and that of his pseudonym, Edward Marshall. He also illustrated more than twenty-five books for other authors. His best known books are the George and Martha series, concerning a pair of hippopotami who are "the best of friends," and the books chronicling the inane adventures of the Stupid family, co-authored with Harry Allard. Marshall's retellings of classic fairy tales are also well-known; his Goldilocks and the Three Bears (1988) was a 1989 Caldecott Honor Book.
The collection contains correspondence with the de Grummond Collection, 31 of Marshall's sketchbooks, two French-language magazines, and materials related to the Christmas card Marshall designed for the de Grummond Collection in 1988. The collection also holds materials related to forty-one of Marshall's published books and to eighteen of his unpublished and/or unidentified works. The correspondence is arranged chronologically, whereas the published and unpublished book materials are arranged alphabetically by title and within each title according to the probable order in which they were created.
The correspondence consists of photocopies of thirteen letters sent by Marshall to the de Grummond Collection. These letters document Marshall's contributions to the Collection and often contain the artist's comments on his own work. The sketchbooks in the collection reveal the earliest stages in Marshall's creation of a new book. He claimed to always carry a sketchbook with him, since it was from these that his published works developed. In fact, all of the sketchbooks in the collection contains preliminary sketches of characters from many books which were eventually published. The two magazines in the collection are French publications, and Marshall's contributions to them, if any, are unclear. Representing the Christmas card designed by Marshall for the de Grummond Collection are original illustrations, color separations, and a printed card.
The materials related to published works span twenty years of Marshall's career as an author and illustrator of children's books. These materials include such varied items as dummies, sketches, illustrations, color separations, galleys, intermediate and final proofs, and storyboards. Six titles in the famous George and Martha series are represented in the collection, as well as three books in the Stupids series.
For the unpublished and unidentified books the collection chiefly holds illustrations, though for one title, Some Fun, there is a rough dummy. Completely unidentified are printed pages from " Mira!" ["Look!"] (Leccion 124), which are probably taken from a Spanish-language primary reader.
