Biographical Sketch:

Joan Lexau was born in St. Paul , Minnesota and attended the College of St. Thomas and St. Catherine. She was the editorial secretary for Catholic Digest from 1953-1955 and a reporter for the Catholic News from 1956-1957. She later worked for Harper & Row as a production liaison in the children's book department when she began her writing career. She won the Charlie May Simon Children's Book Award in 1971 for Striped Ice Cream (1970). In addition to writing picture books, she has also contributed short stories and poems to Cricket, Bank Street Readers, Good Housekeeping and Critic.
