Biographical Sketch

Born Janet Everest in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 5, 1917, Konkle grew up with a love for books. Her favorite stories were fairy tales and ancient legends, often checking them out from the neighborhood school library. She married Arthur J. Konkle on Valentine's Day, 1941and had three children, Kraig Everest, Jill Marie, and Dan Jackson. Konkle was a student at the University of Michigan from 1937-1938, and received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1939 from the Western Michigan University. She has since taught elementary grades, the majority of which have been in kindergarten education. Konkle has been involved with many organizations, including five education associations, the Council of Performing Arts for Children, two photo and camera clubs, and the Western Michigan Cat Society. Twice Konkle has won awards for the photography that makes her children's books so distinctive. This photography is featured in all but one of Konkle's books, her children and the family pets usually composing the subject.

Konkle says, "Seeing photo illustrated books for children on the library shelves, the spark of creativity was ignited and I tried my hand at writing and illustrating. Luckily, my first attempt, Once There Was a Kitten, was accepted for publication." Konkle's other interest include traveling, square dancing, and swimming.
