Biographical Sketch
H. Arthur Klein received his bachelor's degree from Stanford University, and his
master's from Occidental College. He also studied at Columbia University and the
University of California at Los Angeles. Mina C. Klein attended the University of Berlin.
This couple has a wide array of interests, reflected in the diverse subjects of their books for children. They collaborate on most of their books, except for those about science, which Mr. Klein wrote and Mrs. Klein helped to edit. On the books which they co- wrote, Mr. and Mrs. Klein divided the research and writing, then came together to critique each others' work and merge the two halves. In addition to books on science, Mr. Klein wrote a book about surfing, and with his wife, edited an anthology about surfing. Together, they have written about Jewish history and fine art. They have also translated the stories and verse of Wilhelm Busch. Mina Klein died in 1983.

Scope and Content
The collection contains material for seven titles. The materials are arranged
alphabetically by title. Within each title the materials are arranged in the probable order
in which they were created. Masers and Lasers, Bioluminescence and
Surfing were written by H. Arthur Klein. Masers and Lasers discusses
the science behind laser technology, focusing on discoveries about the nature of light
and quantum physics. Mr. Klein collaborated with his wife Mina on the other four titles
in this collection. Hypocritical Helena and Max and Moritz are
translations of stories and verse by the German artist-satirist Wilhelm Busch. Pieter
Bruegel the Elder is a biography of the medieval Flemish painter. Great
Structures of the World investigates feats of engineering from the Sumerian
Ziggurats to the Netherlands sea reclamation project in the 20th century. Most of these
books were written at the young-adult reading level. Materials for these titles include
typescripts, galleys, proofs, dummies and layouts.
