Ethel Kessler was born on January 7, 1922 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . She received a bachelor's degree in 1944 from Carnegie-Mellon University . She attended the Bank Street College of Education from 1955 to 1956 and received her teaching certification in 1965 from Saint Thomas Aquinas College. In 1946 she married author and illustrator Leonard Kessler. In addition to writing, she also worked as a summer camp program director, a social worker, and kindergarten and first grade teacher.

Leonard Kessler was born on October 28, 1921 in Ohio . He earned a bachelor of fine arts from the Carnegie Institute of Technology. He was a staff sergeant during World War II and received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Throughout his career he wrote and illustrated many of his own books, but in 1954 he and his wife decided to collaborate, with Leonard doing the illustrations. Leonard also illustrated books for authors Miriam Schlein, Franklyn Mansfield Branley, C. Paul Jackson, and Nina and Herman Schneider.

Scope and Content:

The collection contains typescripts, illustrations, dummies, layouts, color separations and galleys for 54 titles. The materials are arranged alphabetically by title. Within each title the materials are arranged in the probable order in which they were created. The correspondence is separated by title. The books in the collection can be separated into three categories - those written and illustrated by Leonard Kessler, those written and illustrated by Ethel and Leonard Kessler, and those illustrated only by Leonard Kessler.

Throughout his career Leonard Kessler wrote and illustrated many of his own books. His Old Turtle series featured a turtle playing various sports. There are color separations and a dummy for Old Turtle's Baseball Stories (1982), correspondence, a dummy, layouts and color proofs for Old Turtle's Soccer Team (1988), and color separations, a dummy, galleys, and folded and gathered sheets for Old Turtle's Winter Games (1983). He later added two riddle and joke books to the series. There are sketches, dummies, illustrations, and a typescript for Old Turtle's 90 Knock-Knocks, Jokes, and Riddles (1991) and typescripts, preliminary illustrations for dust jackets, and dust jacket proofs for Old Turtle's Riddle and Joke Book (1986). There are also illustration materials for Are We Lost, Daddy? (1967), The Big Mile Race (1983), Did You Ever Hear a Klunk Say Please? (1967), and Here Comes the Strikeout (1965).

In 1954, Leonard and Ethel began collaborating on books with Ethel doing most of the writing and Leonard doing the illustrating. Together the couple concentrated on concept books and board books for young children. There are typescripts, story boards, sketches, illustrations and dust jackets for Are There Hippos on the Farm? (1987), Are There Seals in the Sandbox? (1990), Is There a Horse in Your House? (1990), and Is There an Elephant in Your Kitchen? (1987). When a big snowstorm hits the city, Stan comes to the rescue in Stan the Hot Dog Man (1990). There are typescripts, dummies, correspondence, sketches, galleys, illustrations, color proofs folded and gathered sheets, and dust jackets for this title.

In addition to his own stories, Mr. Kessler also illustrated many picture books for other authors. There are illustration materials for many of Franklyn Mansfield Branley's books about science, space, and astronomy including Age of Aquarius: You and Astrology (1979), A Book of Flying Saucers for You (1973), A Book of Satellites for You (1971), and A Book of Stars for You (1967). He also illustrated a series of occupational picture books by Carla Green. There are dummies for What Do They Do? Policemen and Firemen (1962) and Cowboys: What Do They Do? (1972), and sketches and a dummy for Truck Drivers: What Do They Do? (1967). Other books in the collection that Mr. Kessler illustrated include Harry Milgrom's Adventures with a Straw (1967), James Lawrence's Binky Brothers and the Fearless Four (1970), Augusta Goldin's Ducks Don't Get Wet (1965), Charles Keller's Colossal Fossils: Dinosaur Riddles (1987), and What's Up, Doc?: Doctor & Dentist Jokes (1984).
