Biographical Sketch
Anne Marie Jauss was born on February 3, 1902 (some sources say 1907) in Munich, Germany. She attended state art school in Munich for two and one-half years. She moved to Portugal in 1942 to escape war-torn Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1946. In addition to writing and illustrating her own books, she has illustrated dozens of books for other illustrators. She is a painter, and has exhibited her works in numerous museums. Anne Marie Jauss died in 1991.

Scope and Content

The materials in the "Books" series are arranged alphabetically by title. Within each title the materials are arranged in the probable order in which they were created.

Anne Marie Jauss wrote and illustrated Discovering Nature the Year Round, Legends of Saints and Beasts, The Pasture, and River's Journey. Like several of the books which Ms. Jauss has illustrated, three of these books concern natural science topics. The collection holds material for all of these titles. There are illustrations for Legends, The Pasture, and River's Journey. There are sketches for Discovering Nature and The Pasture. There are typescripts and galleys for The Pasture. Most of the books which Ms. Jauss illustrated dealt with science and natural science. Hunting Big Game in the City Parks describes the variety of insect life to be found in city parks. From Scales to Fancy Feathers tells of the evolution of bird species. Our Friend the Forest, Perhaps and Perchance: Tales of Nature, Tracking Unearthly Creatures of Marsh and Pond, and Under a Green Roof also concern ecological issues. The collection contains sketches and illustrations for each of these titles. Jauss illustrated other scientific subjects in Collecting Small Fossils, DNA: Ladder of Life, Easy Book of Division, Easy Book of Numbers and Numerals, Here's How It Works, Many Worlds: Seen and Unseen, The Science of Salt, and Time for You. Time for You recounts the history of calendars, clocks, and other methods of telling time. Many Worlds: Seen and Unseen explains numerous scientific topics, such as atomic structure, the nature of light, and meteorology. The collection contains sketches for every title above except for Many Worlds, and Time For You. It also includes illustrations for every title except DNA and Easy Book of Division. There are color separations for Easy Book of Numbers and Numerals.

Other books in this collection retell myths and legends. Books in this category include Fabulous Beasts, Legends of Saints and Beasts, The Little Horse of Seven Colors and Other Portuguese Folk Tales, and The Valiant Little Tailor. The collection holds sketches for each of these titles, as well as illustrations for Fabulous Beasts and Legends of Saints and Beasts. There are typescripts for Fabulous Beasts. and The Little Horse of Seven Colors. From approximately 1956 to 1969, Jauss drew maps and endpapers for roughly twenty-three books in a series by Sonia and Tim Gidal. Each of these books described the typical village life in a particular country. Jauss drew a map of each country, and an aerial view of each fictional village. The collection contains most of the original illustrations for these titles. The books all begin with the phrase My Village In..., except for Follow the Reindeer and Sons of the Desert.
