Biographical Sketch

Lee Bennett Hopkins was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on April 13, 1938. His family -- father, mother, and a younger brother and sister -- was relatively poor but close-knit. When Hopkins was nine years old, financial hardships forced the family to move to Newark, New Jersey. The family's economic situation did not significantly improve, and four years later Hopkins' father and mother separated. Mrs. Hopkins moved her children to a low-income housing project in Newark, and Lee Bennett took after-school jobs to help pay the family's expenses.

Hopkins' education at this point was rather sporadic, since he often had to care for his younger sister while his mother worked to support the family. As a child, Hopkins read little other than comic books and movie magazines until a teacher inspired in him a love of the theatre and, subsequently, of reading. Hopkins credits his lifelong interest in education to this one caring teacher. Though Hopkins did well in his high school English courses, he did not enjoy other subjects and his grades in those were poor. Still, he had decided on an eventual career as a teacher and after graduating high school he began classes at the Newark State Teachers College (now Kean College), meanwhile working several jobs in order to afford his tuition. Once he decided to major in education, his grades markedly improved until he was considered an above-average student.

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960, Hopkins began his professional career teaching sixth grade at a public school in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. He thoroughly enjoyed his job, and in his third year at Westmoreland School in Fair Lawn he became the school's resource teacher, providing curricular support materials for the elementary school teachers. It was while serving in this position that Hopkins first used poetry to help children with reading problems.

Through the influence of the principal at Westmoreland School, Hopkins obtained a scholarship to pursue a master's degree at the Bank Street College of Education in New York City. While working toward this degree, which he received in 1964, Hopkins continued as Resource Teacher at Westmoreland. In 1966 he took a position as senior consultant for Bank Street College's new Learning Resource Center in the Harlem area of New York City. Hopkins welcomed the opportunity to work with disadvantaged minority children who were growing up faced with many of the same problems he himself had experienced as a child. He again used poetry to encourage reluctant readers, especially the works of such prominent black poets as Langston Hughes and Gwendolyn Brooks. Hopkins also began writing articles on children's literature and the use of poetry in the classroom, which were published in journals such as Horn Book and Language Arts. With colleague Annette F. Shapiro he wrote Creative Activities for Gifted Children (1968), his first book. In 1967 Hopkins received a Professional Diploma in Educational Supervision and Administration from Hunter College of the City University of New York.

Racial tensions following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968 forced Hopkins and other whites to reluctantly leave Harlem. He almost immediately secured another position as a curriculum and editorial specialist at Scholastic, Inc. Hopkins' career as a writer now soared; more than two dozen of his books were published during his eight-year tenure at Scholastic. Particularly successful were his poetry anthologies for which he is now best known. In 1976 Hopkins quit his job at Scholastic in order to become a full- time writer and anthologist. He has written or compiled more than seventy-five books for children and young adults, in addition to his professional texts and his numerous contributions to education and children's literature journals. Mr. Hopkins presently lives in Scarborough, New York, where he works as a full-time writer and anthologist.

Apart from his many poetry anthologies and professional texts on elementary education, Hopkins has also written young adult novels, children's stories, and non-fiction books for children. He hosted the fifteen-part children's educational television series Zebra Wings, which was produced in Mississippi and presented different forms of creative writing to upper-grade elementary students. He has also served as a literature consultant for Harper and Row's Text Division. Hopkins has won numerous honors and awards, including an honorary doctor of laws degree from Kean College in 1980 and the University of Southern Mississippi's Silver Medallion in 1989. For a complete list of Hopkins' awards, researchers should consult the sources listed below.

Scope and Content

The Lee Bennett Hopkins papers are comprised of a variety of documents, including collection of autobiographical materials and typescripts. Aside from these and the correspondence between Hopkins and the de Grummond Collection, the majority of the Hopkins papers are the many compilations of poetry for which he is so well known. The de Grummond Collection is privileged to hold materials for sixty-five of Lee Bennett Hopkins' books. In addition to the poetry anthologies, this collection also contains materials for several of Hopkinss novels and materials for the Zebra Wings television program. The titles are arranged alphabetically. Original materials are held for all titles including typescripts, manuscripts, galleys, dummy pages, and promotional items.

The many poetry anthologies created by Lee Bennett Hopkins are well represented here, including such titles as I Think I Saw a Snail: Young Poems for City Seasons (1969) and A Song in Stone: City Poems (1983) in which he gathers poetry presenting brief snapshots of city life. The country life is also represented in the anthology On the Farm (1991). In A Dog's Life (1983)and I am the Cat (1981), Hopkins collects poetry about those animals most dear to us, including poems from such authors as Eleanor Farjeon and T.S. Eliot. Side By Side: Poems to Read Together(1988) is a delightful collection of poetry to draw families closer, along with Best Friends (1986). Hopkins focuses on the joys of daily life in Good Books, Good Times (1990), Munching: Poems About Eating (1985), and Go to Bed! A Book of Bedtime Poems (1979).

Hopkins is also well known for his children's novels. One of the titles, Mama (1977), tells of two boys and the misguided adventures of their mother as she leads their lives with pride and love. Their adventures continue in Mama and Her Boys (1981) with more challenging situations when Mama's boss wants to become part of the family. Wonder Wheels (1979) is a novel written for young adults and tells the story of Mick Thompson, the local star rollerskater and his growing relationship with Kitty Rhoades. The relationship which seems so happy ends in tragedy, though, and Mick is left with Kitty's final secret.

Materials detailing the creation of two of Hopkins' books for adults are also available. More Books by More People: Interviews with Sixty-Five Authors of Books for Children (1974), is a reference book for adults which gives readers the opportunity to meet famous authors through personal interviews. Pass the Poetry, Please! (1972), a resource designed for educators, demonstrates many ways to implement poetry into the classroom. This resource has been published in several updated editions and the Lee Bennett Hopkins Papers traces the first revision from the proposal for revision to the final proof.

Another area of the collection is devoted to the television series Zebra Wings. The materials for this series include correspondence, proposals, manuscripts, and film, as well as the original scripts and notes for each of the fifteen sections of the series. There are also research materials collected by Hopkins, press coverage articles, and student reactions to the show.
