Biographical Sketch
Pearl Harwood was born Pearl Bragdon on December 21, 1903. She received her bachelor's degree from Mount Holyoke College, and her master's degree in education from Boston University. In 1933, she married Lester Harwood. Starting in 1948, Ms. Harwood worked as a teacher and children's librarian in several towns and cities in southern California.

Ms. Harwood published her first children's book in 1964. Between 1964 and 1966, she wrote ten picture books about Mr. Bumba and his humorous adventures with the children in his neighborhood. In 1967, she wrote a similar series of ten picture books about Mrs. Moon and her adventures. In 1971, she had Mr. Bumba and Mrs. Moon marry, chronicling their adventures in series of ten books. All of the Bumba and Moon books were published by Lerner Publications in Minneapolis.

Scope and Content

This collection consists primarily of color separations for thirty children's books. The color separations also appear to have served as layouts. These color separations/layouts contain original watercolor and ink illustrations, and pasted-up text. The twenty-nine books represent every title in the Mr. Bumba series, the Mrs. Moon series, and the Mr. and Mrs. Bumba series. Mr. Bumba's New Job is the sole exception. There are no materials for this title. The collection also holds a manuscript or typescript for Mr. Bumba Rides a Bicycle, Mr. Bumba's Four-Legged Company, Mrs. Moon's Picnic, Mrs. Moon's Rescue, and A Special Guest for Mr. and Mrs. Bumba. The collection also includes a typescript from The Widdles, one of the few books by Ms. Harwood which wasn't part of the Bumba or Moon series.

Preservation Notes

The color separations in this collection frequently include pasted-up text. The text was pasted on with rubber cement, which eventually dries and loses its adhesive qualities. Pieces of text which were falling off the color separations were reattached using archival-quality Jade paste. Pieces which were still firmly attached were not altered.
