Biographical Sketch

Dorothy Francis (nee Brenner) was born on November 30, 1926 in Lawrence, Kansas, and grew up in Olathe, Kansas. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1948 with a music degree. After playing with a dance band for several months, she worked as a music instructor in California, Missouri and Oklahoma before settling in Marshalltown, Iowa with her husband, Richard Francis (married in 1950). Before receiving her first book publishing contract in 1966 for Adventure at Riverton Zoo, Ms. Francis wrote short stories and lyrics for children's magazines. Since then, she has written over fifty young adult books. She has written several young adult mysteries, and frequently sets her stories on islands or in a seaside environment. She has also written several books with anti-crime messages and other value lessons for young adults. Since 1981, she has published over a dozen romances written from a teenage girl's perspective, mostly for the "First Love" series by Silhouette.

Scope and Content

This collection primarily documents Francis' work during the 1980's, although there is material from several earlier books. The collection contains material for several of the stories in the "First Love" series by Silhouette, including Bid for Romance, Just Friends, Kiss Me, Kit!, New Boy In Town, Say Please!, A Secret Place, and Special Girl. Vonnie Morrison is the main character in Bid for Romance and Special Girl. She reappears in two books for another publisher, The Right Kind of Girl, and Vonnie and Monique. These two books focus on friendships and peer relations among teenage girls. A Secret Place is the story of Shay's break-up with Trow, and her search for self-confidence and a new boyfriend. New Boy in Town is about Stacey's relationship with a rebellious young man, and the friction it creates between her and her parents. For all of these books, the collection contains at least one typescript, though usually there are three or more drafts. For some titles the collection includes correspondence, outlines, galleys, or proofs. Francis wrote another series of young adult books in the 1980's about juvenile crime. Books in this series include Shoplifting, Vandalism and Computer Crime. Earlier efforts to influence the morals of young people include Piggy-Bank Minds and The Boy with the Blue Ears. Both contain forty-nine short fables or value lessons. Captain Morgana Mason and Run of the Sea Witch are coming-of-age stories which reflect Francis' interest in sailing and island life (also seen in Kiss Me, Kit!). In Captain Morgana Mason, Morgana takes over her sick grandfather's fishing boat and the responsibility for supporting him and her brother. Francis' daughter is a horsewoman, which inspired her to write occasionally about young women and their horses. In this collection, The Flint Hills Foal, and A Secret Place both deal with this theme. For all of these books, the collection contains one or more typescripts. In addition, the collection usually includes one or more items from the publication process, such as a galley, proof, or layout.
