Biographical Sketch
Janina Ede was born on July 23, 1937 in Southampton, England. She attended the
Winchester School of Art for four years and received a National Diploma in Design in
1957. She married Ruedi Zbinden, a marine engineer, in 1959. Before her marriage,
she received her first commission, illustrating an edition of Colette's Gigi.
After spending a year in the West Indies with her husband, Ms. Ede returned to England
and began illustrating children's books. She has illustrated close to one hundred books
in subsequent years, for all age groups. She has also illustrated a series of reissued
classics for Heron Books. In 1972 and 1973, she illustrated two stories for the television
program "Jackanory". She lives in rural Hampshire, where she cares for and sketches
injured animals.
