Biographical Sketch

Barbara Corcoran was born in 1911 in Hamilton, Massachusetts. When she was thirteen, her parents divorced, and she moved to a new home with her mother. Many of her novels revolve around family break-ups, unreliable parents, or jarring dislocations. Ms. Corcoran graduated from Wellesley College in 1933. After college, she worked in summer theaters and wrote plays, a few of which were produced. During World War II, she was an electronics inspector and a cryptanalytic aide. After the war, she worked for several businesses as a copywriter and researcher, including a radio station and a television company. In 1953, she received her M.A. from the University of Montana. She later taught college English in Kentucky, Montana and California. In 1967, Ms. Corcoran wrote her first children's novel, Sam, which was published by Atheneum. Two years later, she decided to devote herself full-time to children's literature, and has since written over seventy novels, most of which were also published by Atheneum.

Ms. Corcoran's young adult novels deal primarily with coming of age stories. Frequently her characters are misfits or outsiders. Almost all have to deal with some sort of adversity, such as the death of friend or relative, uncaring parents, family break-up, physical disability, or the move to a new environment. Several books focus on animal and wilderness themes. Ms. Corcoran has also written historical fiction and mysteries for young people. Her books take place in a wide variety of locations, but New England and Montana are her most frequent settings.

Ms. Corcoran wrote several books under the pseudonyms Paige Dixon and Gail Hamilton. She also co-wrote books with Bradford Angier and Jeanne Dixon. Her awards include the Child Study Association's book of the year citation in 1970 for The Long Journey, and the William Allen White Children's Book Award in 1972 for Sasha, My Friend. Several of her books were Junior Literary Guild selections.

In addition to plays and children's books, Ms. Corcoran wrote short stories, historical romances, and radio scripts. She passed away in 2003.

Scope and Content

There are two series in this collection: "Books" and "Alphabetical Files". The "Books" series primarily documents the creation and publication of forty-four novels written or co-written by Ms. Corcoran. This series contains the vast bulk of the material in this collection. With the exception of Axe-Time, Sword-Time, all titles in this series are documented through some combination of typescripts, proofs and galleys. Each title in the series is represented by at least one typescript draft. In most cases, there is also a galley. For any one title, the collection holds anywhere from one to six drafts. Drafts with substantial editing or typesetting information have been noted in the box list. Axe-Time, Sword-Time is the only title with research notes, though there is no other material. Also, where there are both manuscripts and book reviews for a particular title, the two have been kept together within the "Books" series. All other reviews are located in the "Alphabetical Files".

The "Alphabetical Files" series contains materials which are not a direct product of the creative or publishing process. One exception to this are some research notes on brain disorders which couldn't be linked to a particular novel. The series contains correspondence, reviews, research notes and fan mail. There are also two speeches, one concerning the history of children's literature and Ms. Corcoran's own experience, and one discussing censorship of children's literature.

The theme of a young person's relationship with an animal, or with life in the wilderness, appears frequently in Corcoran's fiction. This collection has significant material relating to the creation of several books in this category such as Annie's Monster (1990), A Horse Named Sky (1986), Lion on the Mountain (1972), Loner: The Story of a Wolverine (1978), Sasha, My Friend (1969), Summer of the White Goat (1977), and A Wolf at the Door (1993). In A Horse Named Sky, Georgia and her mother move to Montana to get away from her alcoholic father. While there, she dreams of owning a horse, a dream that seems remote until her neighbor promises to sell her a wild mustang. Lion on the Mountain tells the story of Jamie's respect for a mountain lion, and the city slicker who hunts it for sport.

Corcoran has also written several mysteries. In Which Witch is Which (1983), twins set out to solve a series of neighborhood catnappings. The Person in the Potting Shed (1980) recounts the events which occur when Dorothy and Franklin move into a mysterious Louisiana plantation. These two mystery novels, as well as Mystery on Ice (1985) and Watery Grave (1982), are represented in this collection.

In most of the titles in this collection, the protagonist faces some sort of adversity: a family crisis; shyness; outsider status; physical disability; a move to a new, hostile environment; a first experience of independence; or some combination of these.

The Faraway Island (1977) tells the story of a shy adolescent girl who goes to Nantucket for a year to live with her grandmother while her parents are in Europe. The Sky Is Falling (1988), This Is a Recording (1971),You Put Up With Me, I'll Put Up With You (1987), The Person In the Potting Shed (1980), Sasha, My Friend (1969), Family Secrets (1992), and several other novels in this collection also tell the story of a young person's adaptation to a new home and new relationships.

Cold or selfish parents also figure prominently in many of Corcoran's novels. In Ask For Love and They Give You Rice Pudding (1977), a rich, friendless, seventeen-year-old deals with his parents' weakness and their absence from his life. In Face the Music (1985), The Faraway Island (1977), Make No Sound (1977), and many other Corcoran novels, characters deal with a distant, possessive or otherwise unhealthy parent-child relationship.

Family break-up, or a child's separation from his or her parents, is a recurrent theme in Corcoran's work. In Hey, That's My Soul You're Stomping On (1978), a girl stays with her grandparents in Florida while her parents decide whether to stay married or not. In The Faraway Island (1977), The Sky Is Falling (1988), and This Is a Recording (1971), a young person has to leave home for a time and live with a relative. A recently deceased parent or sibling forms the background of many Corcoran novels, such as "Me and You and a Dog Named Blue" (1979), The Person in the Potting Shed (1980), Sasha, My Friend (1969), and Skipper (1979).

In Don't Slam the Door When You Go (1974), Judith and two friends leave empty, comfortable lives in Florida for a more primitive existence in Montana. In Stay Tuned, a fourteen-year-old boy runs away with three friends to the New Hampshire woods. Cabin in the Sky (1976), Face the Music (1985), and The Long Journey(1970) deal with the same subject of young people on their own for the first time. The Lifestyle of Robie Tuckerman (1971), and "Me and You and a Dog Named Blue" (1979) both deal with similar themes, as young people try to achieve independence and decide what to do with their lives.

Several Corcoran novels deal with physical handicaps. This collection has material relating to two such books. A Child of the Morning (1982) recounts a girl's discovery that she has epilepsy. A Row of Tigers (1969) concerns the friendship that grows between two misfits, a girl whose father has died, and an older man with a curved spine.

Corcoran explores a number of other personal and family crises in her novels. In I Am the Universe (1986), the serious, responsible girl of the family has to contend with a number of problems when her mother has to have an operation. In Family Secrets (1992), Tracy moves to a small town on Cape Cod, and copes with the discovery that she was adopted. In The Hideaway (1987), a fifteen-year-old boy escapes from reform school and hides from the police while trying to clear his name of a drunk driving charge.
