Born in 1902, Martin Cole served for 19 years as a historian with the Parks and Recreation Department of California. During most of those years, he was Curator of the Pio Pico State Historical Monument. Cole authored several books including Their Eyes on the Skies, and Journey To Caribou Land. Martin Cole began to collect boys' books in the 1940s, amassing thousands of titles in his forty plus years of active collecting. During that time, he corresponded with many of the authors, securing autographed copies of many titles for his growing collection. His collection focused on boys' books published after World War II, a rare area of specialization.
This collection of correspondence includes letters written to and received from 302 authors of boys' books. All of the letters are either written by Martin Cole to an author, or are responses from the authors to Mr. Cole. The letters date from 1955 to 1983.
Included are letters from Isaac Asimov, Patricia Beatty, Erick Berry, Ben Bova, Arthur C. Clarke, Elizabeth Coatsworth, Walter Farley, Henry Gregor Felsen, Jean Fritz, Doris Gates, Jean George, Robert Heinlein, Irene Hunt, Alexander Key, Victor Mays, Rutherford Montgomery, Walt Morey, Farley Mowat, Andre Norton, Scott O'Dell, Gary Paulsen, Elizabeth Speare, Armstrong Sperry, Theodore Taylor, John Tunis, and Robb White.
The text of most letters deals with Mr. Cole asking for an autographed copy of one of their books for his collection, as well as a discussion of their work. The correspondence was often limited to a letter or two, but in several instances, quite a relationship developed and numerous letters were exchanged. This is the case with William E. Butterworth, Hal G. Evarts, William F. Hallstead, Robert Heinlein, Alice L. Hopf, Eugene B. Olson, Carl Henry Rathjen, and Robb White.
Mr. Cole is himself the author of two books. The dummy for Their Eyes on the Skies is included in these holdings.
In addition to the correspondence, Mr. Cole donated his entire collection of more than 2400 books. These are cataloged and in the published book collection.
