Miriam Cohen was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1926. She attended Antioch College for a year, and spent time in Afghanistan and Brazil. Watching her three sons as they attended nursery school and kindergarten inspired her to begin writing about the struggles and excitement of early childhood. In many of her books, Cohen is an advocate for the emotional and political rights of children. Her first book, Will I Have a Friend? was published in 1967. Lillian Hoban illustrated that book, and several of Cohen's subsequent works. Three of her publications have been Junior Literary Guild selections, First Grade Takes a Test, Jim Meets the Thing, and See You Tomorrow, Charles.
