Biographical Sketch
Jean Shirley (nee Starkel) was born on August 22, 1919 in St. Louis,
Missouri. She married James Shirley in 1943 and had two children. She attended
Washington University and the University of Missouri at St. Louis. From
1962 to 1984, she worked occasionally as a secretary and copywriter. In
1967 and 1968, she wrote several biographies as part of a series published
by McGraw-Hill. She has also written and published numerous short stories
for children. She co-wrote two biographies with her daughter: Frances
Hodgson Burnett and L. Frank Baum. Ms. Shirley died in 1995.
Angelica Shirley Carpenter was born on March 28, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in 1967. In 1974 and 1977 respectively, she received a master's degree in education and library science, from the same institution. She held a variety of jobs in the library field from 1977 to 1982. From 1982 until the present, she has been director of the Palm Springs Library in Florida. She is also the executive director of the "Bookfest! of the Palm Beaches." Inspired by Jean Shirley, her mother, Ms. Carpenter began writing television scripts for a local station in St. Louis. She has since co-written two biographies with her mother: Frances Hodgson Burnett and L. Frank Baum.

Scope and Content
The materials in the "Books" series are arranged alphabetically by
title. Within each title the materials are arranged in the probable order
in which they were created.
This collection contains extensive material relating to the two biographies co-written by Jean Shirley and Angelica Carpenter. For Frances Hodgson Burnett, the collection contains fan mail, and correspondence with Lerner Publications, the book's publisher. The research material contains correspondence with several libraries and archives containing letters and photographs of interest to Ms. Carpenter and Ms. Shirley. Many of these libraries are located in towns where Frances Burnett lived: Maytham Hall, Kent, New Market, Tennessee (see also Knoxville, Tennessee), and Manhasset Bay, New York. The authors also obtained information from Penny Deupree, a descendant of Frances Burnett. The New York Times wrote frequently about Ms. Burnett, and the collection contains copies of these articles. The collection includes copies of over one hundred letters written by Ms. Burnett, as well as copies of over one hundred photographs and illustrations. Finally, the collection holds a typescript, a proof, advertisements, and reviews.
The material for L. Frank Baum includes correspondence with fans and the book's publisher. In addition, the collection holds over a hundred pages of well- organized notes, and a plethora of research material. The research material includes copies of numerous articles and book excerpts about L. Frank Baum. The bibliographic and collectors' information includes copies of card catalogs from special libraries, and newletters for collectors of Oziana. Also, the authors subscribed to several newsletters for fans of Baum's work, and corresponded with the directors of these organizations. Next, the collection contains photocopies of several dozen photos and illustrations. Following the photos, there are a few dozen pages of quotes, and letters soliciting permission to reprint the quotes. The subject file contains a variety of material, mostly corresponding to different places where L. Frank Baum lived, such as Aberdeen, South Dakota; Chittengango, New York; Coronado, California; Evansville, Illinois; Macatawa, Michigan; and the Peekskill Military Academy. Other files contain copies of letters from Baum, and information about Baum's collaborators.
The collection also holds a typescript, advertisements, appearance announcements, and videotapes of two interviews with the authors. The authors collected ephemeral materials with Wizard of Oz themes, and included these items in an exhibition. The ephemera includes trading cards, buttons, greeting cards, a cookie tin, and several other items.
The collection also holds a typescript for an unpublished book, "The Magic Carpet," by Angelica Carpenter and Jean Shirley. The "Miscellaneous" series contains articles about the 1994 Palm Springs "Book Fest." The "Jean Shirley" series includes several unpublished typescripts by Jean Shirley for books and plays.
