Biographical Sketch
Bernice Wells was born on July 21, 1910 in Clare, Michigan. She graduated from Ripon College and married Carl Carlson in 1935. She worked as a society editor for the Lansing Journal from 1936 to 1938, and as a part-time feature writer from 1938 to 1943. From 1948-1970, she was a member of the executive board of the Raritan Valley Unit of the New Jersey Association for Retarded Children.

Carlson published her first book, The Junior Party Book, in 1939. All total, she has written or co-written nearly twenty books for children. Most of these books provide ideas for games, crafts, skits, and party ideas that children can use to entertain themselves.

Bernice Wells Carlson passed away in 2009 at age 98.

Scope and Content
The material in this collection relating to published books has been arranged alphabetically according to title within the "Books" series. Within each title, the material has been arranged in the probable order of creation. Several of the books documented in this collection provide children with ideas for plays or stories and guidance on how to perform them. Act It Out, Play a Part, and Listen! And Help Tell the Story all follow this format. Fun For One or Two, The Junior Party Book, and Make It Yourself! all give advice to children and parents about games and theme parties. Play Activities for the Retarded Child and Recreation for Retarded Teenagers and Young Adults provide similar information for the mentally handicapped and their parents. There are typescripts and galleys for Play a Part, Play Activities for the Retarded Child, and Recreation for Retarded Teenagers and Young Adults. The collection also contains a galley for Make It Yourself! There are proofs for Fun for One--or Two, The Junior Party Book, Play a Part, Recreation for Retarded Teenagers and Young Adults, and Water Fit to Use.

Bernice Carlson and her husband were very active in their local unit of the New Jersey Association for Retarded Children. For several years, Mrs. Carlson was the president of this local chapter. The collection holds newsletters and correspondence relating to this organization.

Bernice Carlson also wrote numerous skits which were performed by the children at local churches and community groups. "Silly Skits and Quickie Puppets" and "Skit Puppet Shows" are collections of skits which were possibly intended for publication. The typescripts and programs for these skits are included in the "Unpublished Playscripts" series.
