Biographical Sketch
Betty Virginia Doyle Boegehold was born on September 15, 1913 in New York, New York. She received a bachelor's degree from Wellesley College in 1935 and a master's from Columbia University in 1943. In addition to writing, she has also worked as a preschool teacher, a librarian, an assistant principal, a remedial reading teacher, and an educational consultant for the ABC, NBC, and CBS networks. She was also an editor for the "Bank Street Readers" in 1967 and Houghton Mifflin's "Discovery" series in 1976. Her first book, Three to Get Ready, was published in 1968 and was followed by several read-along books about a mouse named Pippa.

Boegehold also wrote five books under the pseudonym of Donovan Doyle including Gray Gull and Almost There. Her later books dealt with societal issues facing children including Daddy Doesn't Live Here Anymore: A Book about Divorce and some child education books for adults including Getting Ready to Read. Boegehold died at her home in Bronxville, New York on April 7, 1985.

Scope and Content

The collection contains typescripts, partial layouts, correspondence and galleys for seven titles and one short story from a reading supplement. The materials are arranged alphabetically by title. Within each title the materials are arranged in the probable order in which they were created. The correspondence is separated by title. There are also a few pieces of fan mail.

Three of the books in the collection are part of her "Pippa Mouse" series. The books were designed as "read-aloud/read-alone" books with four to twelve short stories within each book. Her first book in the series, Pippa Mouse (1973), contains six stories about a mouse named Pippa who has adventures with other animals in the woods. There is a typescript for this title. Here's Pippa Again!, published in 1975, includes more short stories about Pippa Mouse. There are three typescripts and a galley for this title. Pippa Pops Out! (1979) contains four more short stories about Pippa. There are illustration negatives, blues, reviews articles, a typescript and correspondence.

The other four books in the collection are also picture books about animals. In Bear Underground (1980), a bear shrinks to the size of a pumpkin seed and is mistaken as a baby ant. There are illustration negatives, partial layouts, and a dust jacket for this title. In Chipper's Choices, published in 1981, a chipmunk makes up poems, stories and games to keep his friends occupied during the winter. There is a typescript and a galley for this title. Like the Pippa stories, Small Deer's Magic Tricks (1977) consists of four short stories. The Indonesian folk tales are about a deer who has to outmaneuver other animals in order to survive. There is a typescript for this title as well.

Bogehold also published a story in a reading supplement for Houghton Mifflin's "Beacon Series." "Zia Under the Sea" appeared in Two From the Future, along with "Through the Crack in Time" by Ann Elwood. There is a typescript and correspondence for this story.
