Biographical Sketch

Dorothy Gertrude Blatter was born in Albion, Nebraska in 1901.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, but also studied at Denver’s Kirkland Art School, the Fontainebleau School of Art in France, and Columbia University.  After teaching in the Albuquerque, New Mexico public schools from 1925-1931, Ms. Blatter moved to Turkey, where she taught under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions (Congregational Board).

Beginning in 1945, Ms. Blatter also began work for the Publication Department for the same organization, where she supervised the production of children's books (especially translations from English to Turkish), and created the artwork for the department.   It is during her time overseas that Ms. Blatter wrote and illustrated several children's books, including Uncle Ali's Secret (1939), Sleepy Sami (1946), and Cap and Candle (1961).  Several of her books were published in both Turkish and English.

Ms. Blatter returned to the United States upon her retirement in 1967, and married Frank Ross in 1968.  She died in Kansas City, Missouri on October 28, 1977.
