Biographical Sketch:

Jeanne Bendick (nee Garfunkel) was born on February 25, 1919 in New York City and studied at the Parsons School of Design. She married television pioneer and movie director/producer Robert Bendick in 1940, and they had two children. During World War II, Bendick served in the American Women's Voluntary Services while her husband served in the Army Air Corps. Bendick began illustrating children’s books in 1943 and writing them in 1944. She usually wrote non-fiction, especially books concerning science and nature. She illustrated her own books, as well as books for other authors, and her work eventually numbered more than 100 books in all.

Bendick worked frequently with teachers and children in order to improve education, and in order to see life from her audience’s perspective. She also collaborated with her husband to produce educational television programming for children. From 1973 to 1975, she was part of a three-author team who wrote the Ginn Science Program, which was a science textbook/filmstrip series for grades K-8. Her fellow authors on the project were Roy Gallant and Isaac Asimov.

Jeanne Bendick had her last book published in 2009, when she was 91. She passed away in 2014 at the age of 95.

Scope and Content:

The collection contains material for thirty-three titles.  The materials are arranged alphabetically by title.  Within each title the materials are arranged in the probable order in which they were created.  Most of the books in this collection deal with scientific or ecological subjects, including those written by Glenn Blough, and those written by Ms. Bendick herself.  She has also written and/or illustrated books elucidating the mechanical principles behind ordinary objects, such as film, television, or automobiles.  Some of these books were written as introductions to their subjects for middle readers, while others were targeted at young adults.  Most of the titles in this collection include some combination of typescripts, dummies, layouts, and color separations.
