Biographical Sketch:

Born on August 24, 1977 in Indianapolis, IN, John Green attended Lake Highland Preparatory School and Indian Springs School, eventually going on to receive bachelor’s degrees in English and Religious Studies from Kenyon College. After working as a student chaplain in a children’s hospital, Green decided to change career paths and become a writer, beginning a job at Booklist as a temp and eventually moving up to production editor and book reviewer. Despite having done much writing during his high school and college days, his break into professional writing started with Looking for Alaska (2005). The novel was received to wide acclaim, earning the Michael L. Printz award in 2006. He has since gone on to publish numerous other YA works, including An Abundance of Katherines (2006), which garnered a Printz Honorable Mention in 2007, Paper Towns (2008), and The Fault in Our Stars (2012). Paper Towns and The Fault in Our Stars have since been adapted into film.

In 2006 Green married Sarah Urist with whom he has three children. In addition to being an author, Green is also active on social media, maintaining a presence on Twitter, Tumblr, and YouTube where he hosts Brotherhood 2.0, a project with his brother, Hank. Green is also involved with local sports clubs, charitable organizations, and Mental Floss, an online and print magazine devoted to pop culture and the millennial generation. He has also worked for NPR where he produced and presented segments for WBEZ in Chicago.

Scope and Content:

The Green Papers contain typescripts, notes, correspondence, proofs, and other materials relating to the creation of Green’s published works, including materials for his collaboration with David Levithan on Will Grayson, Will Grayson; his contribution to Twice Told; his work with Mental Floss; and his early writings. The Green Papers also contain materials for articles, radio pieces, and early writings.

The collection is organized into two series: Books and Miscellaneous Collected Writings. The first series contains materials and correspondence related to his major works while the second contains materials relating to his articles, speeches, radio pieces, and early high school and college writings.

Materials for Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns have been removed from the order in which they were donated. In order to preserve the form and location of the post-it notes originally placed on the typescript pages, photocopies of these pages in their original form were inserted before the typescript pages in the folder, and the folders were placed into boxes 2 and 3.
