Abstract: The Gloria Whelan Papers contain manuscripts, typescripts, printed material, correspondence, research and composition notes, and video recordings created and accumulated between 1976 and 2002. Whelan's papers were created from her composition of 31 published books, two pieces of short fiction and prose, and two unpublished novels. Whelan writes works of historical and contemporary fiction for children and young adults and sets many of her books in the rural environs of northern Michigan. She received the National Book Award for Young People's Literature in 2000.

Biographical Note

Gloria Whelan was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 23, 1923, to William and Hildegarde (Kilwinski) Rewoldt. She took an interest in reading early in life when books provided solace during a bedridden year with rheumatic fever. She sometimes dictated stories to her baby sitter who would in turn type them up for her. Whelan began writing poetry in elementary school and edited her high school's newspaper. She earned B.S. and M.S.W. degrees from the University of Michigan in 1945 and 1948, respectively, and married Joseph L. Whelan, a neurologist, in 1948. Over the next thirty years, Gloria Whelan worked as a social worker in Minneapolis and Detroit and raised two children.

In 1972, weary of the hectic pace of life in Detroit, the Whelans moved to a cabin on Oxbow Lake in the woods of northern Michigan, outside the small town of Mancelona. Their peace was soon disturbed, however, by an oil company that intended to drill on their property. Since the Whelans did not own the mineral rights to the land, the company razed three acres and sank an unsuccessful well, after which it departed. The experience inspired Whelan to write a children's novel about a young boy who worked on an oilrig. It was published as A Clearing in the Forest in 1978.

In the quarter century since she was first published, Gloria Whelan has written thirty-one works of historical and contemporary fiction for children and young adults. Many of her books are set in the rural environs of northern Michigan-so many that critics often considered her only a regional author. Nonetheless, she also has produced works set in exotic locales such as China, Vietnam, India, and Russia. Whelan won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature in 2000 for Homeless Bird, the story of a young widow in India abandoned by her mother-in-law.

Gloria Whelan also has written two novels and a short story collection for adults. She has published several adult short stories and poems in anthologies and periodicals, as well. Whelan lives with her husband on Oxbow Lake in northern Michigan.

Scope and Content Note

The Gloria Whelan Papers contain manuscripts, typescripts, printed material, correspondence, research and composition notes, video recordings, clothing, and photographs created and accumulated by Gloria Whelan between 1976 and 2002. Whelan's papers were created from her composition of 31 published books, two pieces of short fiction and prose, and two unpublished works, as well as her acquisition of a teleplay adaptation of her 1991 novel, Hannah. The material is organized into five series: books, short fiction and prose, unpublished works, teleplay adaptation of Hannah, and other literary material.

The Books Series contains manuscripts, typescripts, printed material, correspondence, research and composition notes, video recordings, clothing, and photographs for 31 books created between 1976 and 2002. The series includes material for every book for children and young adults that Gloria Whelan has written. The papers in the books series are arranged alphabetically by title and the material for each book is arranged chronologically in order of creation when known.

The quantity of material for specific titles varies tremendously, from a single typescript with a few letters to a huge assortment of typescripts, proofs, correspondence, and reviews. The container listing offers detailed descriptions of the holdings for each title and information on the material's process of creation may be gleaned easily from the container listing for each book. Following departmental custom, the processor has numbered each typescript and proof by order of creation (first, second, third, etc.).

Material concerning reviews and awards for specific books are kept with the records for the book in question. Most notably, the papers for Homeless Bird, in addition to the book's production material, include the abundant paraphernalia that arose from Whelan's receipt of the National Book Award for that book in 2000. The papers include items pertaining to the award ceremony, the ensuing publicity, and the subsequent National Book Foundation Gold Medal Tour with stops in New York City and Chicago. Furthermore, Whelan delivered acceptance speeches for some of the awards she received and used the occasions to discuss her literary views and life experiences as they related to her writing. The Other Literary Material Series also contains two similar presentations.

The Short Fiction and Prose Series consists of two magazines, each containing a work of short fiction or prose by Gloria Whelan. "The End of the World," a reflection on the importance of children's books in people's lives, appeared in Book: The Magazine for the Reading Life in 2001. "Terrible Angela," a ghost story, appeared in Country Life in 1992.

The Unpublished Works Series consists of typescripts for two unpublished, undated works: a novel set in Los Alamos, New Mexico, during the Second World War varyingly titled The Quartet, The Gadget, and The Hill; and another World War II-era novel set on an island in northern Michigan entitled The Summer of the War.

The Teleplay Adaptation of Hannah most likely was made by other writers. It was completed in 1995, but never produced. The Whelan Papers contain a photocopy of the typescript.

The Other Literary Material Series contains correspondence and printed material concerning biographical articles, interviews, public appearances, and other literary interests and concerns. The material was created between 1979 and 2002. It does not concern any single book in particular, but rather deals with Gloria Whelan's broader literary interests, activities, and accomplishments.
