Biographical Sketch:

Susanne Suba was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1913 to mother, May, and father, Miklos, who was a painter and architect. Her family emigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn when she was a young girl. After studying art at Pratt Institute in New York, Ms. Suba moved to Chicago to work as a book illustrator. She collaborated with various authors, including her husband Russell McCracken, and was a regular contributor to Publisher's Weekly and other publications throughout the years. As a freelance painter and illustrator, Ms. Suba had exhibitions at The Boston Museum, the Art Director's Club in both Chicago and New York, The Museum of Modern Art, The Brooklyn Museum and many other smaller venues.

Scope and Content:

The collection contains illustrations, layouts, dummies, dust jackets and galleys for 21 titles. There are also illustrations for magazine covers and Christmas cards. The materials are arranged alphabetically by title. Within each title the materials are arranged in the probable order in which they were created. The dust jackets were separated by title if Ms. Suba also did the illustrations for the book. Illustrations for dust jackets only were gathered together in a separate subseries. The collection can be separated into two categories, those written and illustrated by Ms. Suba and those that were illustrated by her, but written by a variety of other authors.

Three of the picture books in the collection were written and illustrated by Ms. Suba. There is a manuscript, a dummy with watercolor illustrations, a galley, and a dust jacket for The Man with the Bushy Beard & Other Tales (1969), a collection of folk tales. The Monkeys & the Pedlar (1970), another tale, has a typescript, galley, pencil sketches, and a watercolor dummy. There are dust jacket materials for A Rocket in My Pocket, the Rhymes and Chants of Young Americans (1948).

In addition to her own stories, Ms. Suba also illustrated many picture books for other authors. In The Hunting Trip by Robert Burch (1971), the wife tries to keep her husband from shooting the animals they see. There are pencil sketches, a watercolor illustration and layouts for this title. She also illustrated a story for a dentist in Rome called My Friend, the Dentist (1952) to teach children not to be afraid of going to the dentist. There are pencil sketches for this title. There are also illustrations for Dangerous Adventure!: Lindbergh's Famous Flight (1977) by Ruth Belov Gross, New York City Kids Book (1979) by the Children's Writer's and Artists Collaboration, Sabina (1941) by Elizabeth Howard, and St. Nicholas' Travels, a Miraculous Biography (1945) by Hertha Pauli.

Susanne Suba passed away on February 4, 2012.
