Abstract: The Symeon Shimin Papers contain illustrations and a promotional pamphlet created and accumulated by Symeon Shimin between 1964 and 1976. Shimin's papers were created from his illustration of seven published books and his creation of nine other illustrations. The majority of the book illustrations were made for A Kite Over Tenth Avenue by Joan M. Lexau (1967). Shimin illustrated more than 50 books for children over the course of his career, including two that he also authored.

Biographical Note

Symeon Shimin was born in Astrakhan, Russia, on the Caspian Sea, in 1902. His family immigrated to the United States ten years later, living in two small rooms behind their delicatessen. Already interested in drawing for a living, Shimin apprenticed himself to a commercial artist at age 16 to help support his family. He attended art classes at Cooper Union Art School at night. In 1929, after working as a freelance commercial artist and briefly studying in the studio of artist George Luks, Shimin spent a year and a half in France and Spain. He returned to New York and in 1938 was awarded a contract to paint a mural in the Department of Justice building in Washington. Shimin's work in children's books began in 1950 when friends Hermann and Nina Scheider asked him to illustrate a revised edition of their How Big is Big? Shimin subsequently illustrated more than 50 books for children, including two that he also authored. He died in 1984.

Scope and Content Note

The Symeon Shimin Papers contain illustrations and a promotional pamphlet created and accumulated by Symeon Shimin between 1964 and 1976. Shimin's papers were created from his illustration of seven published books and his creation of nine other illustrations. The material is organized into two series: Books and Illustrations.

The Books Series contains pencil and watercolor illustrations and a promotional pamphlet for seven published books illustrated by Shimin between 1964 and 1976. The majority of the illustrations in the series were made for A Kite Over Tenth Avenue by Joan M. Lexau (1967). Only one item exists for each of the other six books. The papers in the Books Series are arranged alphabetically by title.

The Illustrations Series consists of nine undated pencil and watercolor illustrations made for unidentified books or other undetermined purposes. Six of the illustrations are either marked with intended page numbers or identified as being made for a dust jacket.
