Severn's papers were created from his composition of thirty published books and his correspondence with the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection. Severn has written over fifty nonfiction books for children on subjects in biography, civics, social history, language, and children's pastimes.

Biographical Note

William Irving Severn was born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 11, 1914 to William and Margaret (Stone) Severn. He attended public schools in Montclair, New Jersey. The son of a New York newspaper executive, Severn spent fifteen years working at a variety of newspapers and radio stations in twenty-two cities. He began writing short stories and articles while still a journalist, but left to become a freelance writer in 1945. He has written over fifty nonfiction books for children on subjects in biography, civics, social history, language, and children's pastimes. He co-wrote four of his books with his wife, Sue Schulz Severn, whom he married in 1936.

Scope and Content Note

The Bill Severn Papers contain typescripts, printed material, research and composition notes, correspondence, photographs, and audio recordings created and accumulated by Bill Severn between 1955 and 1976. Severn's papers were created from his composition of thirty published books and his correspondence with the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection. The material is organized into two series: books and letters sent.

The Books Series contains typescripts, composition and research notes, galleys, page proofs, other printed material, correspondence, photographs, and audio recordings for thirty titles published between 1956 and 1976. The material spans the years 1930 to 1976, but most was created after 1955. The series includes material for titles on subjects in biography, civics, social history, language, and children's pastimes. Two of the books represented in the series were co-authored by Bill Severn's wife, Sue Schulz Severn. The papers in the books series are arranged alphabetically by title and the material for each book is arranged chronologically in order of creation when known.

The quantity of material for specific titles varies tremendously, from a single galley to copious research notes and several generations of typescripts and galleys. The container listing offers detailed descriptions of the holdings for each title and information on the material's process of creation may be gleaned easily from the container listing for each book. Following departmental custom, the processor has numbered each typescript and galley by order of creation (first, second, third, etc.). Also, Severn frequently assigned numbers or letters to photocopied articles and newspaper clippings that he used as sources for his books. His numbering system has been maintained in the organization of the records and described in the container listings for several titles.

The Letters Sent Series consists of six letters sent by Bill Severn to the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection between 1966 and 1974. The letters were selected and photocopied from the correspondence file of the de Grummond Collection because they provide information on Bill Severn's literary views and habits. They are arranged chronologically.
